Mithril

Mithril is a rare metal found only in the Pahar Mountains of Southeast Laivra. Its unique combination of flexibility, durability, and lightweight make it an ideal material for armor, which is its most common use. It is also sometimes used in embossed metal artwork because it is easy to manipulate when heated but strong when cool. Its relatively low melting point is its greatest weakness, so those who desire it more for its function than its form layer it under other garments to protect it from fire and heat.

Cultural Significance

Most Mithril is mined by Jiroft, though other nearby countries maintain mines in the range as well. The Jirofti named the metal after Mithras, their god of the sun. Mithril Ingots are most often exported north to be turned into armor. Followers of Mithras in the coastal cities often do this work, as do Dwarves from Dohir. The Dwarves identify the material with Moltru, a semi-divine folkloric figure known for his cunning. In the ancient past, he is said to have created the metal to fight his rival Abri, a sky warrior from the far south. In their final confrontation, Abri stole Moltru's giant sack of mithril and tried to fly it over the Pahar Mountains. However, a hole in the bag resulted in all the metal being strewn across the mountain, where it eventually sunk into the earth.
