Dasylirion

Dasylirion is an open-air prison for the most dangerous magic users on Vrashyn. For the past century, it has been the go-to for rulers who capture dangerous mages, as it is one of the few places that can hope to contain those who threaten the lives of their subjects, or at least the stability of their rule. Despite a complete lack of walls, security is ensured by miles of inhospitable desert filled with the prison’s namesake plant, which gives off an anti-magic field that interferes with a mage’s ability to access the magic in their focus or spell components. Prisoners in Dasylirion are left to fend for themselves in a desert oasis where one of the few available food sources is the fruit of the Dasylirion plant. When consumed, it confers the plant’s anti-casting effect to the eater. Dasylirion is surrounded by the Kxa Desert, which is inhabited by the Thri-Kreen, a native race of sentient insects paid by the nearby kingdoms to prevent the imprisoned from seeking outside assistance. In carrying out this duty, they will attempt to kill anyone who isn’t an official prisoner escort. Despite all these precautions, many prisoners attempt to escape Dasylirion, usually by destroying plants or running away while the Thri-Kreen guards aren’t looking. However, locals insist that nobody has ever successfully escaped.
