Vina Sangre: Blood Wine of Sulaste

I wince as the blade parts my flesh. A little murmur of pain accompanies the sound of my blood dripping into the basin. I could tell that the fledgling nurse was new because she cut far too deep into my arm and it was over a previous incision. With my face tight and my fist clenched, I waited for the blood to fill up to the  carved line. Nearby the nurse was making notes. Perhaps it was on my behavior. She gave me a nod when it was full and I pulled away with a sigh. She patched me up and sent me to the mess hall for my meal. I heard the bottles clink as she began storing or mixing my blood. 
I did not know what they did with it and honestly I didn't want to know. I was content with my position where it was and I was grateful I was not handsome enough to be a consort. I knew it was rare for plainness to be considered a gift, but it would keep me alive. I never had to worry about putting on airs for the moroi or waking to my throat being ripped out. The consorts could look down their noses at me all they wanted to, but I would not wind up like them. 
Funny that they would feign superiority over us for such a thing. The Donors were just as important... if not moreso. The alchemists had found a way to preserve the Blood Wine so that it could be shipped all over the nation to masters or fledglings who were not lucky enough to have a spot in court or did not possess the wealth to keep a consort. 
Our blood was what kept the masters sated. They were simply status symbols.
