Lerden's Explanation of Abanese

Dear Vatia,   The interesting thing about this language, my dear, is that it was primarily developed as an arcane tongue. You wrote me a long and strongly-worded letter about how you didn't understand a single bit of the draconic language. That is because it is so incredibly beyond our comprehension, once great wizards began inventing Abanese. Fundamentally Ulvan, Abanese allows us to comprehend magics in ways that humanity never could. Not even the finest magisters in Carovige could hope to master the arcane. Since the destruction of Sauliv, there are very few alive that know the tongue.   Luckily for you, dear, I know it and I know it well. This language is a dangerous one, mind you. A simple utterance could clean the paint off of a wall. Magic isn't something that is commonplace anymore. Many see it as more of a hindrance than a boon. They fear that what happened in Abanver will happen in Carovige. This is an understandable concern as, further up the coast, there was a slew of mages that enslaved the citizenry. To what end? They wished to find the underground homes that belonged to the Three. I believe I told you about the Three: they were a group of grand magisters that once terrorized the realm whilst Sauliv still stood. Power, in any form, can corrupt the mind. Money, influence, and magic all have caused even the noblest of souls to grow paranoid and vicious. The last thing you wish to occur when you reach the top is to have someone unworthy push you from it. Hence the saying, "heavy is the head that wears the crown."   Worry not about these mages, Vatia, for this was years ago now. Please review the material inclosed within this package. I have marked the pages with notes that I require you to read. I assure you that Halden's repositories are incredulously boring. The curator keeps making a claim that useless objects like a wooden spoon hold significance to the founding of the church. Rubbish. I shall see you in a month's time.   Sincerely, Professor Dolov Lerden
