The Vault of Deeper Knowledge

The Vault is a school of Wizardry and Wild Sorcery. It was formed long ago by the Mysterious Mistress as a school of Shadow Sorcery but underwent serious reformation with the aid of the Hero Astrid early in The Fifth Age. The school appears on the outside to be a low, flat solid stone dome. It has no doors to the outside world and can only be entered by magical means.

Inside the main hall, it appears to be a humongous black dome shaped room. Glowing orbs of light the size of a head float in place, sporadically dotting the air. Six metal doors roughly human-sized are set into the perimeter equidistant from each other. In the center of the room on the floor is a metal circular hatch about 10 feet wide with a large sigil etched into it. The rest of the structure looks like it's solid stone. The doors inside are a series of magical gates and the architecture defies reason. Those who have been inside quickly conclude it is larger on the inside that it could possibly be on the outside.

All are welcome to study here, but any summoning of Shadow creatures results in immediate magical detection, expulsion, and permanent banishment from the Vault. It is still led by the Mysterious Mistress, who is still alive and must be by conservative accounts at least 350 years old. She was allegedly once a human, and is now something unfortunate that cannot die. It is said the only other soul on Voktegård to know the exact nature of the curse is Astrid herself.

The Mysterious Mistress monitors all magical experimentation and learning within her school, and she does not tolerate others overstepping their bounds. Because of this, the Citadel's Horizon Walker Conclave is forbidden from entering the Vault and she has gone so far as to petition King Cynnig's father, King Cunnil (when he was alive) to enact a law prohibiting Horizon Walkers from conducting any official business in the Mirey Island because they have no jurisdiction there. She was successful in her petition, but there are still rumors that many of the new arrivals to the village of Vault's Fen over the past 100 years are secretly Citadel spies.
