Rites of Nature

In The Fourth Age and further past, the good people of Voktegård kept several sacred rites of nature that were mostly performed by druids and rangers. Though they were vital to the survival of humanoids for thousands of years, the advent of new magics brought by the Heroes of Voktegård and the gods of the Strangers almost entirely erased the use of rites. there are two notable exceptions:
  • The Rite of Water is still used by druids and rangers to make holy water. [In game mechanics terms, this allows druids and rangers to use only the "Bless Water" function of the spell Ceremony which essentially means that they can create 1 unit of holy water (as per the PHB) by performing a ritual thatl takes 1 hour to perform, uses 25 gp worth of powdered silver, and requires the caster to expend a 1st-level spell slot.]
  • The Rite of Winter is still used to dispose of corpses everywhere but in Mørkland. This is not a magical ritual; it simply means burning a corpse or part of a corpse in order to prevent it from possibly arising as an undead creature.

Lost Rites

The Rite of Air has never been known to any elf or druid, but the Last Archdruid of The Third Age did tell druids of that time that he was assured by air elementals with whom he conversed that such a rite did exist, was very powerful, and would remain hidden until Voktegård needed to reveal it to her children. It is believed that, like the other three elemental rites, it will be revealed by an elemental of the appropriate type (in this case, an air elemental).

There are also Dark Rites performed by those who serve The Forgotten Powers. The most common is the so-called Rite of Consecration, which requires at least one murder, and taints either a bladed weapon used in the sacrifice or the very soil where the sacrifice's blood spills. This rite alone is cause enough to justify the genocide of Mørkland, for with enough successful castings, Taint would overtake the surface and it would only be a matter of time until the Barrier was broken again.
