Sapphire Forged Steel
Sapphire forge is the great blacksmithing city in the heart of the Zidian mountains. They produce everything from the refined steel to the elegant weapons upon which they have made their name.
Properties
Material Characteristics
When used in finished weapons, the steel is a shiny silver with a hint of blue.
Physical & Chemical Properties
When properly heat treated and tempered, the steel makes for excellent weapons. It is very flexible, hard, but not at all brittle. It can hold its edge much longer than many other steels, producing the best weapons possible.
Origin & Source
The steel is made mostly of iron. The rest of the material is carbon, fused into the iron during the creation process, and sapphire stones melted down and fused into the iron. This gives the steel extreme strength and its characteristic blue hue. This is also what gives the forge its name, a process invented and used only by them.
Fusing sapphire into the steel is extremely difficult due to its melting point being 900 degrees C higher than that of iron. With extreme ingenuity, the forge masters managed to find a way to fuse them long enough for the liquid sapphire to become homogenous throughout the material, allowing for balanced steel.
History & Usage
History
Weapons and plate armour for the Zidian militaries all require the highest quality recourses. The High King had visited the Sapphire forge after a tour around the continent and was impressed by the strength and ingenuity of the material so much that he requested their services for the entire military.
Discovery
The forge masters in the Sapphire forge desired a stronger material, working with the wealth of sapphire in the mountain the forge is located. After many years of testing the different ways iron and liquid sapphire interacted with each other, they eventually managed a uniform distribution of sapphire throughout the steel. After the sample was sanded and finished, a beautiful blue tint could be seen across the surface of the steel, solidifying its name.
