Matakan Hospital

The coastal mining city of Matakan encourages a wealth of trade to pass through. Many merchants, royal convoys, pilgrims, and adventurers pass through to no surprise to the public. Many of the people who call the city home will gladly welcome any traveler into their home when requested - how else are they to find out what else is happening in the world? Entertaining guests was one of the only ways to hear of what awaits outside the city walls, it only made sense to trade knowledge with those who come passing through. Bunking with others was usually done by trade, blacksmiths would stay with blacksmiths, merchants with merchants. They would have plenty of time to trade all manner of knowledge with each other, expanding their skills in their respective fields, so why would they turn anyone away?   Well, the harsh reality of disease frightens many. Those traveling with a disease are often turned away. So what are the sick to do when traveling? It is not as if they can cure their ailments in a matter of seconds as if they resided in the Elven continent to the south, their magic was a very closely guarded secret, and any person with magic potential a retrieved and taken to join the cult of druids. Magic was no option, they could only wait it out and hope they are not taken by it.   As to not force the burden of illness on others, the sick are expected to stay at a hospital, a communal building lined with beds, perfect for the unfortunate traveler. Many who wish to aid the sick would spend most of their time at a hospital, always full of potential patients. Without Elven magic, curing a sick person is a very laborious task and one that rarely succeeds. Many healers frequent the hospitals to better learn the craft, testing new treatments and conversing with other healers, sharing their knowledge, just as they would if a healer took in another in their home. For this reason, many healers travel from city to city, seeking hospitals to broaden their skill set to further advance the medical sciences.

Purpose / Function

As to not force the burden of illness on others, the sick are expected to stay at a hospital, a communal building lined with beds, perfect for the unfortunate traveler. Design

Most rooms are no larger than three meters deep and wide. Allowing enough room for one bed to be shared by up to four patients at once. Where as this may not be the most practical design by means of curing the sick, it certainly allows for many more patients to be accepted into the hospital than would otherwise fit.

Entries

Each room has one door, for entering and leaving the room. All rooms have a window to control the temperature of the room during the day and night.

Sensory & Appearance

Most of the rooms have at least one patient in at all times. Without regular bathing and the heat during the day, the healers often cover their faces to protect themselves from the stench. The rooms are fairly well lit, the large open window during the dark provides a good deal of light for an accurate examination of the patients.

Alterations

Beds are continuously added to the hospital, allowing for more to stay. Workstations have been added to the building to allow for healers to more efficiently work in this difficult environment.

Architecture

A relatively standard building for the south of the continent, making use of large wooden frames and wooden walls. Large windows on every wall allow the building to stay cool during the day, but trap the heat when the shutters are closed during the cold nights.

History

Instead of turning the sick away to save his population, the Lord of the city wanted a space for them to stay and feel welcome in the city. This may have purely been a political decision to bring more trade to the already wealthy city, but the decision was adored by many nonetheless.
