Death's Rest

A long-held tradition among men is to bury the celebrated dead in vast halls. All can visit the halls and pay respect to those who have passed on.    The same is done for those convicted of crimes or sentenced to death, large crypts dedicated to criminals.

Purpose / Function

The crypt serves an opposite purpose to regular burial halls, to disrespect those who have done wrong. Any crime can send you to the crypts after death, however, the severity of the crime dictates your place. Petty theft, unlicensed weapons, and drunken disruption will reserve you a place among the lesser crimes. High treason, heresy, and murder will place you deep into the crypt.

Alterations

Throughout time, the dead starts to stack up. Many new tunnels are created to make room for new residents. The crypts start as humble caves, eventually becoming as large as burial halls. Those who wish to disrespect the dead may visit and leave a token of disapproval at a body may do so as they wish. All items remain in the crypt, never allowing the condemned to gain back some dignity. It is for this reason that the items laid down offer a permanent change to the crypt.

Architecture

Large stone caverns underground. Very few supports are needed after construction as the caves are built to hold themselves. There are large slits in the walls for the dead to rest, their bodies simply shoved into the walls without even a wrapping. This is to create an uncomfortable eternal sleep for those who deserve no better.

Tourism

Pilgrims who wish to condemn those who have done wrong are often seen in the crypts, however, it is more common to find those with relation to the dead. This is not exclusive to family members, although is widely seen, it also refers to those who have lost possessions and people to these criminals. Murderers will often find the widows of those whose lives they took at their bodies.  Aspiring criminals also take time to visit their idols. The most celebrated of their kind is Ifan Hallowglow, a notorious thief and assassin. He spent his days taking the lives and valuables of others, while managings to slip through the fingers of every guard in Zidia. He is buried in the crypt at Westfjord, a city in the snowy north of Zidia.
