Dead Thunder

In the west lies a small island in between the continents, Zidia, and Grast. The island is protected by its surrounding mountain wall, leaving no way into the island. These mountains are a tough climb and have proven perilous to many explorers. However, there is intrigue for what lies beyond the wall. At all times, every twenty seconds or so, thunderous roars from within. The way the mountains obscure the view of the island makes determining the source of the sound impossible.
Many believe that the Ancient Ones reside within. The accepted hypothesis is that the Ancient Ones dwelled in the mountains, making use of their ability to fly. The mountainous terrain seems like it would be the perfect place for them to hide. however, this does not explain why they stay confined within their natural walls. There is evidence of them existing throughout Tsiki, Zidia, and Grast, so why would they hide within their stony fortress? Every adventurer that manages to make the climb to the summit of the shortest mountain and makes his way into the island never returns. Maybe the mountain is even more treacherous from the inside. Or maybe the Ancient Ones still exist and are delighted to see that a snack has made its way into their lair. Or maybe something even worse lies within.
No storm is visible from outside, although it is the simplest explanation, even a never-ending storm seems illogical to most. Storms come and go, right? There must be a more reasonable explanation. When the thunder roars, stripes of light spill out from above the mountains, leading this to be the most fitting explanation. The theory is that it is not a storm at all, but instead, Dead Thunder. There is said to be a school of magic practiced by the Skiffor Druids that can cause random lightning strikes during the spell's casting. It is said to have been used during the ending of the Before Times when the Ancients roamed the earth. The druids only commune with the Empress or Emperor of Tsiki, so there is no way of knowing whether or not this is true. But some believe that an order of druids is using this island to refine this school of magic, and are plotting to wipe out all none-Elves races.
