Dwarves

Very few Dwarves live in Contra. Most prefer the solitude and environs of their fortresses in The Shield. The Aquilonium (northern continent) Dwarven Capital of Gimraz-Dum (doom), ruled by High King Thorgan, lies in the center of the mountain range and is tied to fortified cities by a network of vast tunnels called The Under Road. After The Divide was built they have been able to trade directly with their cousins on Meridium (southern continent) and have since become increasingly xenophobic and traditionalist. Diplomatic ties with the Humans of Contra have become strained and confrontational, due in part to the behavior of the Siar ruling dynasty being a bunch of idiots.   The small number of Dwarves who choose to live in Contra do so as craftsmen who make a great deal of money. Much less conservative than their brothers in The Shield, Contra Dwarves tend to see the best in Humans and are generally more optimistic and forgiving. This is demonstrated best in their decision to set aside their Book of Grudges.   All other Dwarves participate in an ancient practice known as Grudging. Each Dwarf clan keeps a record of the worst deeds and treacherous wrongs done to them and by whom. Every three years, the clan will gather and discuss additions to this list. It requires quite a bit to be added, and it is rare for any addition to be made. In the event that the clan agrees to add anyone, the entry is first written into a large tome passed down through the generations. Then at the next meeting if the Grudge has not been resolved the entry is then chiseled into a stone tablet, which traditionally resides within the home of the clan elder.   Should an entry into the Stone of Grudges be chiseled in, the entire clan swears to do what they can to inflict an agreed upon punishment upon the guilty party. This usually results in financial ruin of the entire family of those added to the list, or the death of the guilty party by honorable combat. Should any Dwarf of the clan perish in said combat, the next one in line steps up.   The Dwarves of the Shield also have a national Stone of Grudges, also known as The Great Stone of Grudges or "Dammaz Dum" in their language. The entries on this list are typically nations or entire races, though there are very few. The Dammaz Dum works in the same way as a clan Book of Grudges otherwise with the exception that instead of a single clan meeting, the nation gathers every 50 years. Currently the only races in the Dammaz Dum are Orcs, Tieflings, Dragons, and Outsiders. The only nation is Syborea, Human barbarians who remained in the Badlands and have a tenuous peace with the Orcs there. Previously Elves were included in the Meridium Dwarves Great Stone of Grudges, or Dammaz Lor but that was resolved thousands of years ago in peace.

Additional Information

Social Structure

For Shield Dwarves, they have maintained the same system of government for as long as they have had written history. I'm not sure what it's called, I will come back and fix this, but it's largely based around Clans, Guilds, and a single strong religion. Also more on their religion later. Though technically not Feudal, it is unheard of for any clan or family to rule the Shield Dwarves other than the current dynasty. This is in large part because their society is structured in a way that promotes entire clans rather than individuals. So when the clans gather to vote on their next leader when the previous one dies, the current ruling clan has always been unanimously voted for as it is seen as the strongest by far.   Dwarves who live on Contra are not considered to be citizens of The Shield, but rather whatever kingdom they are currently residing in. Within The Shield they do retain some rights that other races do not have access to, but they are not on a legally equal footing. However, they are considered equals to Humans in either Thor or Siar.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The vast majority of Aquilonium Dwarves live in The Shield mountains. There are a few clans, and even some clanless, of Dwarves who live on Contra.

Civilization and Culture

Major Organizations

Within The Shield, Clans and Guilds run most of the show. At this time there is no real point in fleshing these out.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

May add Half-Dwarves as a homebrew race at a later date. However, this would almost be exclusively be half Human.
