In Vilnaia, those who value their lives must either find a well-defended settlement or strength in numbers. Failing to do so means one's death.
This is due to the pervasiveness of
Blight: an insidious organic material which corrupts that which it touches. Blighted creatures show a fervent need to infect any living being, even at the expense of their own life.
Established settlements have a strong, vested interest in eradicating blight wherever they find it: as surgeons amputate diseased limbs, so does
The Prime scour the land when a geographic locale has become overcome with blight. Entire cities have been known to be scoured, pulled into the earth like rocks in mud, only to reappear centuries later in a different location.
In the present day, civilizations have found various ways to cope with the pervasiveness of blight. Some, like the
Syverkin, live nomadic lifestyles. Others, like the
Vordenni, developed a caste-system based on strength of arms. Vilnaia hosts only
a few city-states and countries; the remainder of the population lives in nomadic bands.
In order for a settlement or civilization to have staying power, it must be defended by individuals or organizations strong enough to combat blighted creatures who are able to slip between dimensional cracks into the Material Plane. Such individuals and organizations are know as
Great Powers. Most Great Powers remain aloof and dare not meddle in the affairs of others, lest the battles of these immensely powerful beings destroy what little civilization remains.
