Introduction to Magic

The different planes of existence interact differently with arcane energy. Both Eveya and Ignifia produce and emit their own types of arcane energy, whilst The Aether excels in absorbing all types of arcane energy. As a result, the mortal inhabitants of The Aether are incredibly sensitive to arcane energy. Many creatures have an innate connection to the arcane in some capacity, while some will devote their lives to harnessing this power. Wizard is the general name given to a being that actively uses the arcane to cast spells and create magic. Both mages and sorcerors are types of wizards.

Mages

Mages are beings that have devoted themselves to the study of a specific plane of existence, aligning with certain beliefs and powers associated with that plane. Often mages will gather to form settlements and schools devoted to the study and way of life of their aligned plane. Several such places exist for both Eveyan and Ignifian mages, each holding different values and beliefs at their core. The majority of these settlements are inhabited by the general population as well as mages, with these people all aligning with the beliefs of their chosen plane. Most major cities are not aligned to either plane, although their histories often reveal that they were originally founded by mages and lost their alignments long ago as they grew too large.

Sorcerors

Sorcerors are magic users who have a natural affinity for the arcane, and while sorcerors often do study like mages, their natural ability to absorb the arcane means they do not have to align themselves with one plane and can draw freely from any arcane source. Sorcerors are far more uncommon than mages, having to be born with their gift. It is not clear what causes a sorcerer to be born, and there are rarely more than a handful in a generation. The most notorious sorcerer to have existed in Vexum is Illdur. As a result, some cultures who have rarely seen a sorcerer be born as one of their own harbor fear towards those who possess this natural talent. This fear, while somewhat understandable, is not shared by all cultures in Vexum.
