After the First Necromantic War, the Vodranti clans had found a common enemy, and there was a strange sort of peace among them. Feasts were held on Yauu as a sort of diplomatic gesture between clans, and the Gesala found themselves focusing more on their people than on a petty grudge from centuries past. It was a strange time.
And from that peace emerged the Empress, a Vodranti bearing astral blood, a true Carovatt, who claimed Dominion over all Clans.
Several clans did not believe the Empress had the right to claim her powers, and, while against the idea of uniting, united against those supporting the Empress. Mostly space and boarding warfare between ships within the Asteroid field. Fairly insignificant given the resisting clans were themselves poorly united and had relatively smaller numbers. The Clan of Vesta (now known as the 9th Legion), the largest, resisted the Empress, and while they eventually surrendered, they still give little attention to her millennia later and remain the largest, and the most independent, legion.
