Gärdsgrinds (Guards-greends)

Behold, the Fences of Fervere, the Gate of the Guided! During my travels, I have seen much in way of beauty, but this sight is beyond anything else. My sketches do it no justice, my songs cannot begin to describe it.
— Journal of Numforis, Benjamin, a travelling bard, c. 1058 ADK
The Gärdsgrinds, also known as the Fences of Fervere, is a mountain range bordering both the Nation of Fervere and the Kingdom of Miryegu, and happens to be the largest mountain range on the Glemrt/Rødsger continent.

The Gates of the Guided

The Gate of the Guided, named so for the territory's strange shifting ways which only the chosen few can follow, is a patch of non-mountanious terrain in the approximate middle of the Gärdsgrinds mountain range. Instead of the usual skyscraping mountains, there are rives and fjords of varying heights, as well as several documented islands, though their exact location is never the same. A thick fog descends upon all travellers, it is said, except for those which know the Captain's ways. It was once thought by Miryegu and allies of this Kingdom that having a Ferv on board was enough to pass through the Gates safely however this proved wrong quickly.

History

These mountains have seen bloodshed, pain, fear, starvation, and war. Finally, they see peace.
— Speech made by a representative of the Ferv people, c. 3070 ADK

For centuries, the mountains served as The Great Protector for the Ferv, keeping the Miryugen armies on their own land. Without this range, many theorise, the wars built up against the Ferv would have seen them enslaved or wiped out eons ago.

The mountains themselves has served not only as a barrier but also as a sacred place for those of the Captain's followers. For those unfamiliar, the Captain is one of the only non-Original deities who may be worshipped in a legal manner across most of the world.

Many theories of why the Ferv think of this mountain range as sacred exist but the most prevailing is the Unearthed Legend, in which the Captain Herself or one of Her devoted servants had raised the mountains from the ground just a day before the first of the attacks upon Her people were set to occur.

Notable Locations

  • The Gate: As previously mentioned, a mysterious and shifting landscape and the only known passage through the mountains.
  • Fort Overvac: A military station and, later, social settlement near the Gate, found on a reletavily even surface on a mid-level mountain.
  • Himmelskepp: A place of worship constructed into the side of one of the mountains in the higher regions and built to look like a ship. Temple to the Captain.

Inhabitants

Historically, the inhabitants of this mountain range have been those of orcish, goblin, and gnomish descent. However, the range is also home to a number of other inhabitants, from giants to goliaths and even dwarves.

This is somewhat reflective of the rest of the Ferven Nation, as Ferv is often seen as a synonym predominantly for orcs but have also been utilised for goblins and similar individuals, and such folks inhabit much of the state.
