The Pantheon Myth in Venya | World Anvil

The Pantheon

At the start of the Universe a set of powerful beings separated from the endless void of the astral sea and came together to form the cosmological planes that we know of today. Many of them joined into two opposing forces, Creators and Destroyers, destined to be locked in endless conflict with each other until the end of time. The Creators fight to keep balance and to keep the universe structured. The Destroyers seek to revert the universe back to its ancient Primordial Chaos. The Creators go about bringing forth light and justice while the Destroyers live in shadow and lies, each capable of great good or great evil. Alongside the great Creators and Destroyers are other lesser demigods who were created to serve a function or were mortals that gained divine status for their actions in their life.

The Creators

Teora - The All-mother

'Those who care for nature and life are blessed beyond all else.'

Symbol: A jade tree growing within a black circle.
The patron Goddess of all natural life, from her nourishing touch all things grow and live. When Venya was created and cooled, she seeded the world with the multitude of plants and animals. She wishes to see nothing more than for the wonderful life-forms of her creation to grow and thrive together. She has a calm demeanour and temperament.

Generally perceived as a full-bodied matronly woman made out of various natural materials, her symbols are trees, cornucopias, and the mother sign. She is worshiped by those who revere the earth and whose lives are consumed by agricultural and harvest. Druids and Rangers also commonly associate with her worship as they seek to protect the world from unnatural invasion or destruction. She speaks through the winds, in the songs of birds, the chorus of insects, and the howl of the wolves.

Samudir - The Tide-bearer

'Rage and forgiveness ebb and flow like the tides.'

Symbol: Waves cutting across a hexagon.
The Patron Goddess of the Seas and usually associated with freedom, travel and the oceans. When the molten core of Venya sprung forth, it was through her cooling waters, that the surface was made liveable. Just as the seas may turn quickly so too does the demeanour of Samudir. In a moment calm waters give way to a raging storm battering ships that do not have the humility to pray for safe passage. And as water washes away the sins of the past so too does Samudir wash away and forgive easily.

Generally perceived as light skinned female dressed in a flowing silk dress, her blue hair cascades over her shoulders. When angered her presence darkens like the storm clouds above. She is usually worshipped by sailors and farmers when the rains are late, she is also the patron God of the traveler. Safe voyage and travels are common things for her to be asked.

Laki - The Justicar

'Balance in all things. Light and dark. Life and death. Order and chaos.'

Symbol:A white Chalice on a golden background.
The Patron God of Honour, Justice and Law. Laki is generally associated with the values of right and wrong. It is said that he brought order to the cosmic chaos and his works are seen throughout the laws of nature, and man. Balance is the key, and when the balance is put in danger, Laki steps in to smite the dishonourable and the damned.

Generally perceived as a barrel chested man adorned in beautiful plate mail and wielding a war-hammer in the shape of a large gavel. Paladins and law makers pray to Laki to assist them in the judgement of those that come before them, that they may see the just outcome.

Sapere - The Knowing One

'Knowledge brings wisdom. Wisdom brings truth and truth brings peace.'

Symbol: A blue eye on a white background.
The patron God of Knowledge and Truth, an elderly male creature with a long white beard and a single eye. It is said that there was nothing until Sapere opened his eye and it will not close again until the end of all things. He sees all and seeks to share the knowledge of the universe with whoever will search. A more neutral god, he cares little for right and wrong, instead there is only knowledge and the purity of truth.

Sapere is usually revered by wizards and scholars, however justices will sometimes pray to sapere to help them find the truth of a difficult case.

Aedun - The Forgemaster

'The Genius of Aedun is all around. In the stars and very light of the world.'

Symbol: A black anvil and hammer on a red background.
The patron of the Forge, they represent the light of the world and the life giving heat of the sun and stars. It is said that in his great forge, he crafted each star including the sun to give light to the universe and bring heat to the cold emptiness of the sky. The bones of Venya and the other planets were forged in his great fires, and he instilled the living molten core of Venya to provide inner warmth and allow sustained life to thrive on the surface of the world. His symbol is an anvil encased in flame.

Perceived usually as a dwarven man in normal smiths attire, thick arms grasping a hammer and tongs he works endlessly for the forge and creating great works of arms and armour bring him great joy. He is worshiped by smiths and artisans who seek to create on his level, they ask for inspiration and his guiding hand when forging their own pieces. He is also worshiped by paladins and clerics for his searing light. It is not just enough to create, but to master the art of war using his implements is to also revere him.

The Destroyers

Kohuru - The Violent

'Give in to Rage. To Anger. To Violence. It with soothe you.'

Symbol: A black gauntleted raised fist.
The Patron god of violence and anger. He preys on those who give in to anger and drives them to violence and murder. Living in peace and prosperity is an aversion to the wanton death and destruction of the void beyond. Depicted as a brutish humanoid creature akin to an orc but horned and having 4 arms, he wields a sword, war-hammer, battle-axe and spiked gauntlet in each of his hands. He wears no armour as he believes only in the power of offence and that the best way to preserve yourself is to kill all others. The opposition to Teora and her life giving powers, his worshipers kill wantonly and work to destroy the natural world.

Salevara - The Slaver

'Those too weak to oppose me should serve.'

Symbol: Mace enclosed in a ring of chain
Patron god of domination, Salevara is depicted as a pale woman in full plate mail armour wielding a sword and flail astride a dark horse. She recognises that while chaos is allowed to reign then the strongest will thrive and it is their destiny to conquer the weak. Freedom is not a right but a privilege for those strong enough to take it for themselves. All others should be bound by chains and used as needed. She wishes to make an army of the weak to wage war on the forces of good to claim dominion over the world. She sees it as her right as a mighty being to claim ownership and subjugate the weak to put them in their places. Choice is such a burden, she aims to remove that burden from them forever.

Worshiped by warlords, slavers, jailers and torturers they call on her to assist them in punishing the weak and wounded.

Loukata - The Hunger

'Eat. Feed. Consume.'

Symbol: Hand with a spiral palm, showing the infinite grasping nature of the beast.
The patron god of greed and hunger. The undulating worm-like creature eats everything in it’s path without a care in the world. It has a swollen greenish tint to the fleshy body, no face just a gaping maw of jagged teeth like a lamprey and countless arms that reach out and carry it towards its next meal. It’s existence is nothing but consumption. It is said that the universe will ultimately end with Loukata consuming the very essence of the universe, and all within it. As such during the creation of the world, Loukata was imprisoned with the combined efforts of the Creators in a Cage forged by Aedun. There it waits for its eventual release and subsequent feast.

Generally Loukata worship is strictly forbidden, and even those on the evil alignment are hard pressed to worship such a creature. Anarchist cults have sprung up from time to time who worship the entity. None have grown large enough to have any real impact as the nature of the worship is to take from each other and in fighting usually dissipates the organization if the paladins don’t find them first.

Il'ingan - The Liar

'Truth and lies spread chaos. The key is knowing when to use one or the other.'

Symbol: A mask divided in two, one side smiling and the other frowning, portraying their duplicitous nature.
The patron god of lies and deceit. They hide their two faces on either side of their head using the comedy and tragedy masks, switching between them as needed to convey the desired emotion. Il’ingan has been known to put on a friendly face to gain trust and admiration only to stab you in the back.

Revered by spies and assassins, his followers show their true colors in the masks that adorn their faces. For those that seek the truth, Il’ingan is there to obfuscate it from them and to hide the true intentions of those who wish not to be found out. They wish to bring out absolute chaos where one is never quite sure what is a lie and what is the truth, at that point the truth means little and trust is forgotten entirely. When the people of the world stand alone distrustful of each other, they are easy to destroy.

Kysgodol - The Cold Shadow

'Light is temporary. Darkness is eternal.'

Symbol: A broken circle with a cross erupting from the broken limits of the circle.
The patron god of darkness and shadow. This formless shade acts to extinguish the light of the world. It has a cool temperament, never showing rage or anger, but instead being cold and distant even to the most devout followers. Where the light shines brightest, there in its wake, lingers the darkest shadows. Kysgodol often works with Il’ingan to help hide its agents from the truth and the light allowing their assassins and spies to work to destroy civilisation. Worshiped significantly in the underdark by drow and duregar it awaits the time when the peoples from below will be able to rise up and take the surface, to blot out the sun in the sky. Then in the darkness, chaos will reign supreme and fires of the forge shall cool and the light of life shall be snuffed out.

Khur Rengar - The Dark Smith

'Hammer and fire, darkness and betrayal.'

Symbol: A burning rune on a black square.
With the help of Il’ingan, one of Aedun’s own apprentices was turned against him. Rengar the jewel was dragged into darkness where his mind was lost to the evil forces. twisted and turned, he now takes his immortal place as the patron god of the duregar deep in the pitch black of the underdark.

In complete darkness he hammers away, the flaming rune, eternally burning, on his forehead the only point of light. One that signifies his betrayal. Even the sparks of his evil machinations give off no light, absorbing it instead.

Death - Obituu

'Some cry. Some run. Some Hide. And some enter willingly. But all will feel my embrace, in time.'

Symbol: An hourglass, where each grain is a skull.
The domain of the dead is not contained within Eithert The Creators or The Destoryers. A single ancient entity watches over the dead and reaps the beings of the universe. Obituu is its name and none know of its form. Called the Shrouded Void it is seen as s genderless being, usually envisioned as a skeletal figure covered by a loose burial shroud obfuscating its features. It is said that those who pass beyond see behind the shroud at the full visage of Obituu and the void he encompasses. Obituu takes the souls of the deceased on to the afterlife. Adventurers can resist his pull to the beyond resulting in ghosts, but those that see behind the shroud face the void beyond.

It was brought into existence not to destroy but to maintain balance. The nature of souls is not entirely known and so thier place after existence is also shrouded in mystery. Though usually seen in a negative light and feared, Obituu is true neutral and calls only those whose time has come to an end and assists them in their departure of one existence and into another.
Once many gods strode across the plains, claiming thousands as their followers and leaving their handiwork in their wake, but now only few remain, at least those that can be remembered. During the Age of Enlightenment when the mortals, through their own hubris sought to be made as gods, the pantheons began to fear what would happen should they succeed and upon the opening of the great gate and the dawn of the Age of Desolation their fears came true.

What followed was devestating, not just for the mortal planes, but for all, and across the ether gods and titans fought, good against bad, dark against light. Many fell from immortal wounds, or decayed as their followers were consumed in fire and death. It became so dire that they took to the mortal planes themselves in the forms of avatars and godlings, eager to seal the breach that had been opened. Though the dark gods would not tolerate such interference and did the same. The battles between mortals and gods shook the fractured world and led to the cataclysm.

When the dust settled many had fallen, vanished or turned. What is known is many were lost, but can be found, and sects of mortals are devoted to finding mention of lost gods and their practises, all to bring back what was lost.
