Allsend Landing Settlement in Venya | World Anvil

Allsend Landing

'Don't lean too far. The pull of nothing is strong, like a lure on the soul. Your body's urge to return to its natural state.' - Trench Icesteel, Mayor of Allsend Landing

Written by Yerran

Far into the Maelstrom, islands begin to vanish, and the presence of land diminishes greatly, their matter shattered by the world bending pull of a planar fissure and the continuous eruptions of The Rage of Castellian. All know the cause in myths and legends, and any with a semblance of sanity would stay far from this place, where air doesn't shimmer, land stays land and moments of history don't play out like a sick parody of theatre in the streets. However, those of 'Allsend Landing' are far from sane, as shown by their macabre sense of humour in naming the town (All's End).

Founding

The ice gnome twins of Frostrun, called 'The Mad Twins' by many who roam the seas of Venya, sailed the twelve oceans and beneath the waves, their exploits of adventure and fame tantalising many across the planet for decades, until they embarked upon their last quest; to sail the Maelstrom and down into the depths. They set sail with their crew from the 'Hall of the Stormriders' within The Shattered Shelf aboard 'The Gallivanting Otter' in 2481 A.C and were not seen again for five years.

That was, until the great explorer, 'Captain' Yali Surefoot (who had been a junior crew member of the twins in her youth) sailed the gauntlet of the Shattered Shelf and came upon the Maelstroms heart. A whirlpool of indescribably proportions, one that fills the breadth of the horizon. And there they stumbled upon the only landmass within sight, supported by 'The Maiden of Telenheim'. Upon its 'stone' they found what remained of 'The Gallivanting Otter', smashed and rebuilt as a dozen shacks and buildings within the crook of the great statues neck, to shelter from the storms. Yali was surprised to find some of the crew still lived though Kalista, one of the twins, had perished. She gave what aid she could, but Trench refused to leave, swearing his seafaring days gone with the death of his sister. As he spoke of his time so close to the Maelstrom his eyes told of madness and genius, and it was Yali that listened.

Their deal saw Yali return to the Shattered Shelf and tell the tale of what they'd found, and of the town to be built upon the edge of the world. Many were drawn in, particularly the 'Stormriders' and their guild within Stormheld Bastion. Expeditions were soon announced as all sought to be one of the first in history to oversee the Maelstrom. It was with this that Allsend Landing was founded.

A Settlement on the Edge

Building and maintaining the settlement of Allsend Landing had many challenges, though thanks to the 'Orb of Sapere' gifted by Yala and the sponsorship of the 'Stormriders' and their guild it managed to quickly spread across the landmass supported by the 'Maiden of Telenheim', her head, shoulders and her outstretched arms. As part of their deal 'Trench Icesteel' has taken up position of mayor of the town and is building odd and ingenious contraptions throughout the town to better utilise its space and location.

The settlement has become a hub for thrill seekers, explorers, pirates and all manner of scholar and lords who wishes to see the edge of reality and experience the world fracturing magics with their own eyes. Laws mean little, and dangers abound within the hastily constructed streets, while the rich spend more to elevate themselves to the most grandest of experiences, as if upon the most lavish of holidays. Though it is not only the sights and magics that the rich comes to experience, but the famous delectable experience, only possible within Allsend Landing, at a magical restaurant called 'No place like Gnome', where what you eat isn't food.

Though with all this Allsend Landing has become a sickening parody of life, Trench's greatest joke. A place with all the vices of Paruga but upon the edge of the world. A place where all you crave can be satisfied, while a monument to the errors of such living, a scar upon the fabric of reality itself, lies just below.

Curtain of Sapere

Discovered by 'Captain' Yali Surefoot, the Curtain of Sapere was found on the maiden voyage of the 'Silver Breeze' and gifted to the town of Allsend upon its founding. This ancient artefact has many undiscovered functions, but is currently held in the town hall of Allsend casting a shield of protection around the town and anchoring it amongst the turbulent flow of magic and water, preventing it from being smashed into oblivion with the frequent eruptions of The Rage of Castellian.

The Maiden of Telenheim

Over the spinning vortex of the Maelstrom sits Allsend, teetering on the edge where no other earth or stone can possibly stand. What keeps the earth beneath the towns foundations from washing away is 'The Maiden of Telenheim', a massive statue rising from the edge of the Maelstrom arms out-held as if in offering; and upon those arms and hands hangs a chunk of earth the size of town. None know of the statues origins or purpose, but its size and what it's made of defies all known knowledge. Any attempt to glean more information of this incredible landmark have come up short, and most have given up, content to thank the Maiden for the wellbeing of Allsend and those that life within.
