Icharan Systems

Monarchy, Military

Icharan Systems Icharan Monarchy:
The Royal family is the highest authority, the ultimate authority being King and Queen, tasked with managing the country and its foreign affairs, inner politics, resources, laws, and people. If no one in the royal family is eligible for the throne, the Royal Advisors choose the next ruler from the serving Dukes/Duchesses. If there are no eligible Dukes/Duchesses the next ruler is chosen from the Counts/Countesses, followed by the Marquets, followed by the Barons/Baronesses. If there are no Royal Advisors to choose the next ruler, the Marquets choose from the same order of title-holders, except they would choose from the Barons/Baronesses before themselves. If there are no surviving members of the Royal Capital, the Dukes and Duchesses vote to elect the next ruler, and their family takes the place of the Royal family and select a new council of advisors and marquets. Tradition does not allow for hostile takeover - If any member of royal lineage or title-holder or commoner makes any attempt to assassinate anyone to take title or rule they are to be executed and the next eligible heir will take up title or rule. If the next heir in line is suspected of involvement in the assassination, they are taken to trial and the Truth Seekers (Royal Clerics) before a judge and jury cast Greater Restoration and Zone of Truth. If Zone of Truth fails the suspect is found guilty and replaced, if Greater Restoration Fails the investigation is opened to the entire Castle.
Royal lineage is inherited through bloodline, marriage or adoption. The only one with authority to remove a title of royal lineage is the King or Queen. Not even the King or Queen can grant a title of royal lineage to one who has not qualified royal lineage. The only situation where the King or Queen would grant a title of royal lineage is in the situation of the serving Duke/Duchess or their current heir being unfit for the title (illness, crime, disrespect, etc.) so it is passed to another of their family or another of the royal lineage. The title of Count/Countess can be removed for the same reasons but this title doesn’t get replaced/passed on. The Royal Clerics (Truth Seekers), based on specific circumstance, technically outrank everyone, including the king. They are high elves chosen by Bahumat in the Royal Temple, found in the center of the castle. Centuries ago, Bahumat was the official deity of Ichar, but around/after the fall of Rhodaoxys, the nation took a more neutral religious stance. They by code have absolutely no involvement in political, national or foreign issues, they are devout and traditional and are provided every accommodation by the King and royal staff. They do not advise on any issue aside from communing for answers from Bahumat and sharing their visions with the king.
Princes and Princesses are the next highest authority, and manage the bulk of foreign affairs and much of the inner politics, as well as a great portion of the other responsibilities. They have the authority to grant and/or remove the title of Baron/Baroness to any Icharan citizen. The Royal family also take seats in the Supreme Court alongside the Marquets and Royal Advisors. The King and Queen have ultimate authority in this court.
Royal Advisors help manage the Royal family’s responsibilities, they reside on the grounds of the Royal castle and outrank everyone outside the Royal family. They are not required to have Royal lineage but often do.

Marquets manage the Royal capital and essentially act as Dukes/Duchesses for the capital. They mainly oversee tax collection from the towns. They most often do not have Royal lineage, but they outrank Dukes/Duchesses but are outranked by Royal Advisors. They have many hired personal assistants to handle the load of their paperwork, paid out of personal pocket.
Dukes and Duchesses receive their title, authority and responsibilities from royal lineage. They manage the titles and people under them, as well as the royal and municipal laws, politics, and resources. Much of these responsibilities are delegated to Barons and Baronesses, but they hold official charge. Dukes and Duchesses can also grant the title of Baron/Baroness but they do not have the authority to take such title away - even if they granted the title themself. Only the King and Queen (or a Prince/Princess) has the authority to remove a title. There can only be one serving Duke and Duchess per town at a time, any other connected lineage to the serving Duke and Duchess is titled a Count or Countess. They hold ultimate authority in the Royal Court, but any Count/Countess or Baron/Baroness they deny in the Royal Court can request a hearing with the Supreme Court. These hearing requests pass through a Marquet and a Royal Advisor before reaching any member of the royal family, including when you make your request in person.
Counts and Countesses have higher authority than Barons and Baronesses but they are not officially assigned or obligated to any responsibilities or involvement in the country’s management, affairs or politics. The individual authority/power a Count/Countess holds in their town, Municipal Court, and in the Royal Court waters down with the amount of Counts/Countesses residing there. The same applies to Barons and Baronesses, but their responsibilities water down the same way. Barons and Baronesses act as municipal government and voices of their townspeople. They manage town resource distribution and each hold a respected seat in each town’s Municipal Court where they can advocate to the Counts/Countesses and Dukes/Duchesses for issues of politics, law, resources, and foreign affairs. The title of Baron/Baroness is most often earned from Dukes/Duchesses or the Royal family for hard work and reputation in the title holder’s town. Basically if you work hard at improving your town, advocating for change and getting involved in politics, you will earn a title if your people and Duke/Duchess respects you.
Member's of any of the Royal Guilds (Adventurer's (AG), Mage's (MG), Artificer's (EG) and Chemist's (CG)) have special authority and lawful immunities situationally. It is generally taboo, regardless of rank, to disrespect a member of a Royal Guild, because this position is tied closely to Royal Family, and punishment for disrespect could result in execution, life sentence or banishment.
Adventurer's Guild members essentially enjoy diplomatic immunity, their actions need only be reported to the Castle. With the exception of treason, defamation, conspiracy, or the murder of any person of rank. If an AG member is arrested for any of these reasons their badge is confiscated and they lose their membership effective immediately. To become a member it must come straight from a member of the Royal Family, and they must have met in person within the castle and received the AG badge personally. Anyone who holds possession of an AG badge through any alternate means is charged with treason, conspiracy against the Crown, impersonation of a King's official, and defamation of the Adventurer's Guild.
Mage's Guild members essentially hold the same level rank as Barons, and are often requested as investigators into suspected magically-charged crimes. To earn membership, you must attend and obtain a magical practice degree and MG badge from one of the Royal mage Academies: Ildeia’s Prestigious Academy of Advanced Learning and Magical Practice (the most direct line to receive a higher rank as a Castle Mage), Rienna's Official Academy for Gifted Mages (More likely to become a investigative mage, majority wizard and sorcerer training/schooling), Willowsfield Advanced Academy of Arcana (Extremely popular, not all too connected to the Castle but very prestigious and one of the longest running mage schools, from before Ichar's founding), and Clear Water Valley's College of Magical Arts (The MG bard college, basically gets a degree and MG badge you can choose to use but it doesn't guarantee you any jobs, just an equal rank to a Baron). Members are not exempt from any laws, but gain power, prestige and a verified license to use their magical skills, particularly when it comes to police work, local or national.
Artificer's Guild members earn a license to practice artificery and create utilities and weaponry for the Castle, Royal Guilds and Army by attending and obtaining a artificer's degree from one of the Royal schools of Artificery: The Crown's Jewels School of Engineering and Artificery (Ildeia-based, the most prestigious choice, immediate connection with the Castle and guaranteed work for the Royal family), or Tiamat's School for Mechanics, Engineers & Artificers (Very popular, Brinhold-based practical learning school, hot choice for gifted workers who prefer freelance/less direct ties to the castle but same license, rep & connections), Shearstone's Engineering and Artificery School for Mechanics (Extremely popular mixed bag, industrial town with lots of local business and popular site for the Castle to order supplies, raw materials and commissions), and Kruthfort's Engineering and Artificery School (least popular to earn an EG badge from, still hard school to get into, focused on Engineering/Mechanic work, huge connections to buyers outside Ichar, those who earn an EG badge here mainly use it for foreign marketing).
Chemist's Guild members, similar to AG members, earn a license to produce and sell potions and other chemical experiments to the Castle, Royal Guilds and Army by attending and obtaining a chemist's and/or chemical arcana degree from one of the Royal Academies of science: Fardesto's Academy of Chemical Science, Arcana, Advanced Learning & Experimentation (Popular, can minor in magic but can't earn a MG badge or full degree, Fardesto's most prestigious general learning school, still most focused on the chemical arcana and chemist (chemical engineering, chemical experimentation, potion maker) degrees), Colman's Coastal Cauldron - School for Potion Masters, Chemical Engineers & Experimentalists (chaotic small town/big college vibe, get their supplies first picking from the major harbour, popular), Juniper Valley's Academy of Science & Chemistry (Most popular for potion master's degree), Lakeside's School of Chemical Engineering (most solid generalized education/reputation), and Werthport's Academy of Chemical Arcana (self-explanitory, gets supplies from their major harbour).
In all these situations, any artificer/chemist requires a license to practice and/or sell that they can apply for or earn from a degree, but the degree doesn't have to be from the Royal Chemist's Guild, it can be from any of the many chemist's guilds (of different names.) A mage/adventurer/hunter/ranger also need a license to practice magic, hunt, etc. and they can attain such from any licensed guild or school, either through application/testing or schooling. But to earn a badge from a Royal Guild, you must meet those requirements to obtain such rank, connections, exemptions, etc. And in order to be employed/utilized by the Castle, you must possess a badge of a Royal Guild.
