The Obrontsy

The Obrontsy is a vigilante group based in the Twin Kingdoms which serves as an unofficial special police force, dealing with extreme or particularly complicated crimes. It operates partially outside of the justice system: members have a right to take actions which they feel are necessary for the defence of the state, short of murder and the seizure of property, and if their acts are deemed unreasonable, can only be made accountable to a court held by the Obrontsy. In theory, this means that the Obrontsy are able to enter private residences to seize evidence or suspects, and can engage in drastic methods of interrogation; in practice, it largely means that the Obrontsy are not limited by issues of jurisdiction, but are able to lend aid to any local police force which requests it, and are also best placed to investigate corruption and the misuse of power. The Obrontsy is particularly concerned with nobility and proper conduct, and holds its members to a high standard; in order to join the Obrontsy, an individual must swear to always place their nation above themselves, and to do no more harm to others than is strictly necessary. Members are expected to be mobile and able to act when requested, and cannot hold office within the political system of the Twin Kingdoms; traditionally, membership is comprised of younger sons and daughters who are not in a position to inherit land or titles. In the current era, the Obrontsy is particularly focused on preventing the Nakhani from securing a foothold in the Twin Kingdoms and, where possible, pushing back the gang's influence in neighbouring nations.

Structure

Hierarchy within the Obrontsy derives entirely from social status within the Twin Kingdoms, which is itself based largely on birth. Foreigners may join, but can never advance higher than the equivalent of the merchant rank, no matter how noble their birth in their original nation. Among individuals of the exact same social status, the oldest member is given the right to speak first in any discussion and to moderate the contributions of other members.
