The Nakhani

The Nakhani is a criminal organisation, originating in Lokshetra but with a growing or established presence in many other nations. The organisation is particularly famous for its use of the its name and iconography from its most common weapon, the tiger's claw, a bladed weapon worn over the knuckles. An individual member is called a nakh, and there are five hierarchical ranks beneath an overall leader, the Eye of the Nakhani, whose identity is known only to those in the highest rank. The Nakhani originated as a respected band of mercenaries, known for its violent efficiency and willingness to accept even those warriors who had been rejected from ordinary society, but within a few decades of its foundation, the group had expanded from military conflicts into assassinations. It soon began to run a protection racket, which quickly developed to encompass espionage, theft and illegal trade. As the influence of the Nakhani has spread, following major trade routes, it has developed a looser structure, with each local leader having a significant degree of independence, but expected to pay requisite dues to the central lair in Lokshetra and to conform to any instructions issues by the Eye, who enforces their will through violent means if necessary.

Structure

The overall leader is called the Eye of the Nakhani, while each local leader is called a "hunter". Beneath that, the ranks are "devourer", "shadow", "stripe" and (the most junior rank) "cub".

Assets

The organisation owns property in most major towns and cities in the areas in which it operates. Some buildings are rented out to legitimate businesses or tenants, particularly those who find rental property harder to come by (for instance, in many places, new migrants or non-citizens find they have little choice but to pay the high rates of the Nakhani), but others house brothels, gambling dens, illegal fighting pits and lower-end inns and taverns. Other properties are used as safehouses or as a lair (a local base of operations). The Nakhani makes much of its wealth through its protection racket and through trade in illicit items, ranging from ordinary items which are transported without paying the requisite taxes, to drugs, stolen goods and even slaves.
