The Bonfire Tradition / Ritual in Vanigraad | World Anvil

The Bonfire

"What a gathering this year! I see before me several new rangers, huntsmen, and huntresses. I bid you make them feel welcome here.  With the darkness growing in recent months, I am overjoyed to once again see so many familiar faces return to the Bonfire. I look forward to your stories, trophies, and rumors!" ~ Elistreada Grand Huntress of the Silver Conclave.   As the winter turns its icy gaze away from Vanigraad, giving way to the warmth of the Spring Solstice. Rangers from all across the continent gather to celebrate the beginning of the week long Wild Hunt with a festival known simply as the Bonfire. Held in a large glade at the heart of the Evergreen Wood, known as the Twilight Stage. It serves as a waypoint for the coming year, as well as a place for Rangers to trade information, weapons, and supplies.   The Bonfire begins with the Grand Huntsman, or Huntress, of the Silver Conclave addressing the gathered crowd. Welcoming new arrivals, announcing the deaths, if any, of Rangers who attended the previous year's Bonfire. As well as presenting their own tale and trophy of their most exciting hunt of the previous year. This trophy is then presented to a High Priest/Priestess of Garrow as an offering to His gathered Wild Hunt. The trophy is then catalogued, blessed, replicated via magical means, and then burned in the Everflame of the Bonfire. The replica trophy is then later mounted for all to see in the Trophy Hall of the Silver Conclave in Aeranas.   The Bonfire then kicks off into full swing as the attendees present their own hunt trophies for the God of the Hunt. Followed quickly by caravans setting up their stalls and the flames of cook fires being lit as the smell of roasting exotic meats begins to fill the glade. For the first three days the Bonfire is strictly Ranger attendees only, as it gives time for these men and women to decompress, relax, and steel themselves for their coming hardships. The final two days the Twilight Stage opens to all folk who wish to present offerings to the Wild God. These last two days play host to Bard performances, tavern owners, cooks, and brew masters all looking to acquire exotic ingredients that can only be obtained when the Rangers bring in their hauls to sell.   When the seven day celebration begins to draw to a close, a final blessing is given to all Rangers in attendance from the gathered clergy of Garrow. A blessing from the Wild God for protection in the wild lands of Vanigraad. A blessing of good luck, good aim, and a request to bring even grander trophies next year. After this final blessing, the caravans pack up. The bards move on. And the Rangers vanish once more into the wilds. Refreshed, renewed, resupplied, and ready to protect Vanigraad's borders from horrors yet unseen by common eyes.
