Midnight Pearls

Jewellery made with Midnight Pearls is often passed down from generation to generation, staying within the same family for hundreds of years. It is passed from mother to daughter as a wedding gift, to a son as he leaves the family home to set out on his own, or to a new child to celebrate their birth. This jewellery commonly comes in the form of amulets of protection or tokens of good luck. Due to the pearl's subtle glow, whoever wears it, the story goes, will find their way even in the darkest of times.   Found only in Lake Trika, the oysters that produce the Midnight Pearl live deep on the rocky lake bed, where only the most skilled (or foolish) divers are able to reach them. Many have tried to seed the oysters in more accessible locations, but due to the creature's sensitivity to sunlight, all such attempts have failed. Oyster divers train for a long time to be able to reach and also identify the oysters that are ripe for harvest. Skilled divers can make a decent profit selling the pearls, but with the risks involved, many divers perish before they get the chance.   Thus, genuine Midnight Pearls are a rare and treasured possession for those who are lucky enough to have one. And therefore, it is a very special gift to be given on such a pivotal day as your wedding day or the day of the birth of a child. For many families, an amulet crafted around a Midnight Pearl is their most valuable possession, only to be sold in the direst of circumstances, but often not even then.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The midnight pearl, usually no larger than a pea in size, is dark blue in colour and yet it appears to emit a subtle light. The light is usually a pale shade of blue, although on rare occasions it's completely white. Midnight Pearls emitting a white glow are considered more valuable due to their rarity.   Usually taking a teardrop shape, rare examples of the pearl have been found which are completely spherical.

Geology & Geography

Found only in Lake Trika, at a depth of 50 metres or more, the Midnight Oyster produces pearls at a rate of about 1 per oyster per every two years.
