Astral Sense

In a world as rich in magic and spiritual energy as Vana, it only makes sense that certain sages have the ability to connect to and feel the spiritual energies around them. This spell allows sages to make sense of the many spirits and energies that flow around them.

Effect

Similar to telluric sense, astral sense allows the caster to sense the world around them. Instead of using magical energy to sense physical objects, however,  it uses spiritual energy to sense spirits and ley lines between Vana and the spiritual world.
This spell takes into account both animate and inanimate objects, and the aura that surrounds them. The aura on creatures is created by their own state of mind and spirit. All sages, spirits, animal, and sentient beings alike are made up of a combination of the four Pillars of Magic (Light, Dark, Mental, Physical). A sage using this spell can sense this combination to determine the integrity of the being they're observing. Astral sense can detect murderous intent or fear or hunger - etcetera. 
As for inanimate objects, this spell can identify the aura of the strongest memories associated with said object. This sense can be affected by time so that often the strongest aura comes from whatever memory is most recent within the object (as far as who used it and what it was used for). However if the object is associated with a time of great suffering or joy, those memories will shine out clearer even if many years have passed.

Side/Secondary Effects

Due to the immaterial nature of the spell, the emotions and spiritual auras can often become confused so that it's difficult for the caster to piece together the timeline of the emotions around an object. (This isn't true for living specimens, as their emotions in the present far outweigh those in the past - and reliving memories from the past counts as a current emotion).

Many spirits and sages have spells capable of blocking or minimizing the ability of astral sense. Other than that, the state of the caster's own mind can prove to be an obstacle. Those who aren't so attuned with the spiritual world may have a difficult time making use of this spell.
