Telluric Sense

The cave is pitch black. There are no tools with which to light a torch or provide any form of light. Besides which, the moment a light shines, the creatures in the dark will know exactly where you are... if they don't already. The solution is to see without seeing. (Look at me, I'm so cryptic).   Also, caves are a nightmare to try and navigate. Why not use this spell to determine the layout of the area? A tricky thing to do, certainly, but possible.

Effect

Telluric sense allows the caster to sense solid, physical objects within their vicinity as long as they're in physical contact - either direct or indirect. For example, if there was a desk with various trinkets on its surface but the sage was using the spell in contact with the floor, they'd first be able to sense the desk, and then move on up to the items resting on top of the desk. If an object was floating in midair, it would be impossible to sense with this spell.

Side/Secondary Effects

It takes concentration to keep this spell up. Some highly skilled sages can use the spell constantly without much thought, but it takes years of practice. For those who aren't so used to the spell, it takes up a lot of energy and will power. Additionally, the sight the spell gives can get muddled the further out the sage tries to sense, or the more objects within the vicinity to distract them. Moving objects are the most difficult to keep track of.

Manifestation

Only the caster has any sense that the spell is in effect. It works best when their eyes are closed, as the spell doesn't provide actual vision, but rather a feeling or idea. The effect is difficult to describe, just as the image a person might have in their mind of a specific place. They can see it perfectly, more or less, but it might be difficult to describe to another. (Oh hey, I've just described every author's struggle.)

Perhaps the most overlooked difficulty of casting this spell is the density of the objects that the spell senses. The less dense an object is, the more space there is between molecules, which in turn inhibits the capabilities of the spell and returns a fuzzy image to the caster. Hence, why this spell doesn't work with gasses or liquids. (With the exception of certain hyper-dense liquids, of which there are too many to name, and also I'm lazy).
