Starlight, goddess of the cosmos

I need you to know that everything I say next is a lie.

I am the one known as Starlight. While the other gods keep themselves grounded protecting the same planet, my role as the guardian of the skies is mine and mine alone. This is a role I’ve willingly played for centuries, and hope to keep for centuries to come.

THE DEITY

Starlight is the deity of the cosmos and illusions. She’s rumored to come from beyond this world, possibly from beyond the stars. She hasn’t confirmed nor denied this, leading to a ton of speculation.
There are some rumors floating around that the sky isn’t the real sky and that it’s hidden behind an illusion created by Starlight. While the theorists claim they have facts and heaps and heaps of evidence, most of that paranoia is theirs and theirs alone.

THE PERSON

Starlight herself tries to be a very nice person despite her terrifying reputation. It doesn’t help that she struggles to change her divine form to something less intimidating, so it’s a mildly common sight to see a being with a thousand star-speckled wings buying candy for a child.
She’s fascinated by the sophonts of the worlds, and can and has spent many a day staring into her scrying pool to observe these beings in their natural habitat. She is also known for taking young magic-weilders under her many wings and teaching them the proper ways to cast without hurting anyone.
She also seems hesitant to talk about her past or anything related to the Lunar Rituals (the ritual she performs nightly for an unknown reason), even though the latter is part of her job.

THE TRUE STORY

In reality, the starlight who meanders around the world and protects the people of the planet from harm isn’t starlight at all and never was in the first place. What truly lives in the shrine of the skies isn’t even a god, but a being of chaos.

During the war between the gods and chaos, the gods came very close to losing the war altogether. Chaos overwhelmed their forces with every single step, and the gods themselves couldn’t do much to stop chaos’s wrath.
Taking this in mind, the original starlight stepped forth and proposed a trade of sorts. The gods would offer one of their deities to stay in chaos for a while, and chaos would offer up one of their own “deities” in exchange. The other gods protested at first, but Starlight knew this was their only option. Eventually, she got the others to agree and then offered herself up for exchange.
Luckily, chaos agreed to the deal and gave the gods one of thier own- a nameless godess who carried the magic of illusions. After she left her home, the deity was severly weakened. Despite this, they continued.
The deal was complete.

After a few days, the World Watcher asked the nameless deity for help in finding some way to communicate with Starlight. With her help, they managed to create the lunar rituals.
One of the key parts of the lunar rituals is a special tea. It was made with veyr specific and rare ingredients, and when the World Watcher taught the nameless deity how to make it he told her one specific phrase to remeber.

“Don’t waste it. Not one drop.”

She took this to heart immediatly, careful not to spill a single drop of the tea each time she made it. Each time, the World Watcher would complement her on her job as they performed the ritual.

After months and months of performing the rituals every night, Starlight’s communication went silent. Any attempts at contacting her through the rituals no longer worked. The World Watcher was devastated, but didn’t give up yet. He tried performing the ritual again and again, yet never made it through whatever was blocking him.
The nameless one tried to help as much as she could, but all she could do was make the tea and help perform the rituals. After starlight went dark, she decided that she was going to help as much as she physicaly could. After all, she had agreed to get traded for starlight during the war.

Little did the world watcher know, she was using he own methods t drain the tea. Every night, the nameless one would take the teabags and carefully drain them of every drop of liquid until they were as dry as the deserts of Valyria.
She’d drink those few drop every night, sure not to waste any. After all, she was still following the world watcher’s orders.

A few years later the two were performing the ritual as normal when the World Watcher noticed something… different. Something about his pupil was not nearly as chaos-tinted as it had been, and now was replaced with something a lot more divine.
He asked her about it, and she told him about how she had been drinking the leftover tea. Fortunatly, the world watcher only saw it as a happy coincidence and began teaching her the way of the gods. She got the hang of it quite easily.

Eventually, the world watcher gave up on communicating with their lost goddess. It had been decades without a single sign that she was still alive. Nevertheless, the nameless one decided to keep trying and trying.
It wasn’t long until word got around enough for the people to start questioning where Starlight had gone. Before unrest could spread, the nameless one donned the name of her predecessor and took her place.

Opening with "everything I'm about to tell you is a lie," was very compelling, and the story lived up to this promise. I like the idea that even beings of chaos can grow and change.

Check out Natural Magic : a coming of age fantasy novel, because life is hard enough when you're fourteen, even without saving the world. Or listen to it in podcast form .
