Flashfire Lookout

Flashfire Lookout is an outpost dedicated to studying the rings. The researchers there have published many articles about their findings, and even made a few public appearances to talk about their mission.   Despite being one of many Ring Research Stations (Affectionately dubbed as RRSs), Flashfire Lookout is probably the most well known, with space for people to stay and participate in the research as well as places such as restaurants and coffee shops for refreshment. This has made it a popular place to go if you want to learn about the rings in-person.
This place is very close to the rings, due to being on an island a good few miles out from the coast. Some first hear of its location and then question its safety, with the rings constantly raining magic down on the oceans like some kind of storm, but the lookout is equipped with many protection spells to keep those on the island safe.

The Founders

The original founders of the RRSs were Bertha and Caroline Eilos, who gathered volunteers and set up surveillance camps all across Kathrir to keep an eye on the rings. This soon snowballed into what you see today.
Nowadays, many people help out with the RRS mission, with some of the more populated outposts evolving into small villages such as Flashfire Lookout.

Living in Flashfire Lookout

Flashfire lookout is considered a very nice place to live, as long as you don't mind your horizon being 3/4 water and sky and 1/4 giant glowing storm.
The island has many places to stay, with many open houses built into the main structure of the outpost. These are relatively close to where the restaurants and café are located.
There is also a bookshop with all kinds of books right next to the café, and new books are delivered in every day. It is also the best place to go if you want to read articles by the RRSs.
You do have to be careful of a few key things when living there.
The constant mana barraging the protection spells sometimes can slip through, and those on the island are discouraged from casting spells to make sure that no one accidentally blows up the place.
The tides are also affected by the rings being so close, and usually no-one is allowed too close to the beaches at any time past 5:00 due to safety reasons.
Keep that stuff in mind and you should be fine.

Just a small, quaint little research town at the edge of a storm! Definitely on my bucket list. Or my 'come here and stay forever' list. If they have a bookshop, I'll be there within 24 hours.
