Forged in the maw of Mount Destronic, the Birthing Stone is arguably the most powerful magic source in Valorium. Also called the Power, it usually resides in the Spirit Dimension, where it cannot be seen, heard, felt, or smelled.
When in solid form, it takes shape as a giant diamond, owned exclusively by the Demure Family. Hunted as they are by many, many Fellowships seeking to own the Power, the only reason they are still in possession is their ability to roam in-between the Temporal Realm and the Spirit Dimension.
Every year, the Demure Family travels to all the Deeplands villages and collects the unwanted babies, who are left on doorsteps in anticipation of this.
The babies then touch the Power and receive a portion of it for their own. Each gains at least one ability, though up to three are not uncommon. Any more that is considered extremely rare.
After the children received their Power, they were left in a specific cavern, where the Fellowships chose new recruits. This was a day of peace, and the day when all grudges and old battles were cast off as they celebrated a day of renewal. One by one, children were held up and an announcer asked who would be willing to adopt them. Couples then volunteered, and could only adopt a second if there weren’t others who wanted one who didn’t have any yet.
The Fellowships were mostly peaceful, and they always stayed below ground, except for the time Ringtat went below and were on his infamous recruiting mission. Several Fellowships volunteered and came above.
Those who did, however, revoked their right to live below, and left the underground world forever.
