The Unpowered
When the Powered who stayed above had children, the Powers were warped. Instead of a clean, tidy Power that could be contained, some had Powers they couldn’t stop or start. Some didn’t inherit any Powers at all and lived perfectly normal lives.
But those who had unstable Powered needed help. For some, it was so bad they killed everyone they came in contact with. Others could only see thousands of miles away and were unable to see their own feet.
To accommodate these beasts and escape those who thought they should be exterminated, Sanctuaries were built. Huge underground vaults were built for those who couldn’t be in contact with others.
Of those Unpowered, there were those who could tell that something evil was stirring in the outside world.
That “thing” was Necross.
One day, he attacked all the Sanctuaries at once, with no warning, killing many. Only the brave sacrifice of Geartar the Soothsayer let the survivors slip away.
Those who were left started to rebuild, somewhere where Necross couldn’t find them. But the pitiful few who were left didn’t need multiple Sanctuaries. They only needed one, so they chose The Haven, knowing it had proven strong.
But the Mindless who had protected it under Ringtat’s reign were gone. They’d all been killed by the hiers went they went crazy, and the high wall that used to surround the castle had eroded drastically. Huge forests had sprung up on the surrounding hills, but they didn’t provide much protection.
After a few years passed and the Unpowered began to relax, Necross gathered his forces to attack again.
Of those who had survived in the past and knew Necross would be a threat, there were two who had turned out invaluable; Fling who could only run faster than most beasts could sprint and couldn’t turn off his enormous strength, and Audra, who could only see a hundred miles in front of her and was often plagued by disturbing visions.
Fling and Audra were an unstoppable team, but they weren’t always this way.
Fling was a Skinne, a Kind that shared organs that resided deep underground. When Necross attacked the first time, Fling was stabbed where his heart would have been, and he pretended he was dead. His parents were killed helping others escape.
Audra was a Scaulauk, a Kind that had a thick layer of bone on their heads. Audra escaped by plowing through the enemy. Her parents weren’t so lucky.
These beasts were best friends, and they were the reason the Unpowered didn’t die out after the second Necross attack. Fling kept an eye out through Audra, and she saw the undead armies coming first. He tried to warn their leader, but he didn’t listen because the beasts Fling were mentioning weren’t supposed to exist.
Legend has it that the leader was sitting at the table eating lunch when he looked up and saw Pyrogliders. He only said one word:
“Run.”
They all managed to get away, but they heard a voice from the sky saying the forest would be burned. Fling and Audra- and some of their friends -fled, but they got separated from the main group.
During the years that followed, many things went wrong. They were shunned from the fellowships underground, from the Order of the Sun and Moon, were attacked by various forces at least once every week, and lost two friends to Albino Plague.
In the end, they made a decision, helped by Felmaw- alias Melfwa:
They had to take down Necross. They managed it, and saved the world, but Fling was killed. Audra was torn apart by the loss of her friend, but she didn’t give up, making a deal with Starsong:
To give them a place to stay at her palace, in exchange for allowing her to run tests on their magic.
She agreed, and so they lived with her for the rest of their days.
