Supernatural Types

As a Seeker I have seen many things, been through many things since both my sister and me were children. Most of which were dangerous and have cost a life which is why I write this book, to warn others and Seekers. Please take this seriously, if you don't it may cost you or a loved one's life.
Later on, in the book, I will explain The Afterlife, though some of the stuff I went over there is will be going over again, only this time I will be teaching you what to look out for and how to deal with the spirits.

Spirits

Spirits like to roam mostly in the Material Plane, don't worry, they are harmless. These spirits have a choice, though it can also depend on who they were before they had died. If the spirit was religious when alive, then they can go to the city of judgment, of course, someone who does not worship a deity can go, but there are consequences, they can go to the Ethereal Plane and "live" for the next 200 years there, or can continue to roam, though most of the ones that roam in one spot don't know that they are dead.
(note* don't just tell a spirit they are dead, they don't take it well)
Spirits can form attachments to a location, building, or to a person, these can happen before or after death, right as the living being become a spirit, or sometime after. An attachment can cause the spirit life span to freeze until the attachment is broken, destroyed, or dead. Attachments are what can make a spirit change, either to a Wraith, Poltergeist, or a lament, I will speak more about these later on. What can cause this to happen is if the attachment is destroyed or ends up being killed, though the change does not happen all the time.
Now, what to look out for and what to do when it comes to spirits, the simple answer on what to do is nothing, they are harmless and most of the time won't bother you. Though if you are experiencing problems or annoyances contact a cleric for removal or preferably a seeker, though just so you know if they are following you that means they are fond of you. When it comes to identifying a spirit, is subtle, but noticeable. Look for ghost orbs.

My Own Experience

1831
When I was just a child, my sister and I were fighting over what we should do, it was a spirit that helped us settle our differences. The spirit, at least when they are in the material plane looks rather distorted, but we were able to tell what they look like. This ghost was Female, with long red hair, and was obviously a half-elf. Though we did not know at the time and she was thought of as our imaginary friend, though when my sister and I fought, she would be there to settle it. We no longer saw her after we separated, which made both of us sad because she was nice.
1844
My next encounter was in the Ethereal Plane, the person that taught me illusion magic. He is very tall, I think about 6 feet 8 inches, red hair, blue eyes, pale skin and is human. Turns out in the Ethereal Plane spirits are more put together and easier to see what they actually look like, which is nice. This spirit provided me a home and taught me everything I know about magic, and he follows me around to this day!

Wraith

about 90% of wraiths I have come across are not seeable by most people and tend to follow people around or stay in dark places, like alleyways, underground tunnels, or basements. These wraiths are known as a lesser wraith, only being able to influence their target to harm others, give nightmares, create paranoia, and appear as a shadow person. The other kind of wraith is the greater wraith, those are the ones to be afraid of (note* Seekers should tell a person if a lesser wraith is following a person) since they are able to do damage and makes attempts to steal life forces.
Wraiths overall are very resentful, anger-fueled, and jealous of the living, which makes them fall under the vengeful spirits category and are also more common than the revenant. All wraiths have chains that wrap around their attachments, the longer the chain the more of an influence a wraith has on the area or person. If the attachment is of an area, you would feel a sudden bit of coldness that sends chills down your spine, a person would feel weighted down and would confuse it as stress. One last thing, that is rather important about wraiths, is that they will eat other spirits to gain more power.
Now, how do you know if you have wraith and what to do about it? Wraiths are harder to figure out as some other spirits will also have the same signs, but here is what to look out for. Handprints, these guys leave handprints, though they look more demonic as they are trying to toy with their target. dropping temperatures, their aura is cold enough for your surrounding area to get so cold that you can see your breath. Frequent nightmares, once again they are trying to scare you to toy with you, this can be a good way to know if the spirit that is haunting you is a spirit. Another good way of knowing is if you see shadow people, wraiths love to loom and watch their target.
It is best to get rid of a wraith when they are a lesser wraith, all you need to do is isolate yourself for a while or surround yourself with clerics, this will starve the wraith and ensures that spirits don't come near you. If there is a building that has wraith activity, get some salt and some holy water this will help to let spirits know that something is up and to avoid. Now, what if the lesser wraith turns into a greater wraith and starts attacking every living being it sees, well, silver helps kill.

My Own Experience

  1844
This was the last ghost hunt I went on with my sister, though this was two ghosts in one, I will only focus on the wraith. These wraiths were being used by an anomaly, making them going after both my sister and I, in the end, they got my sister. The entire building had chains wrapped around it, they were ruthless. That being said, learned how to use wraiths for my own doing.
1847
I was traveling with someone that had a wraith attached to them, long chains were wrapped around and had a tight hold. They did not sleep well at nights, often having circles around their eyes, I later find out they had murdered someone and that they have a history. I did not stay around that person long, especially after they had threatened me.

Phantoms

These beings have never lived or died, their origins are unknown, though it is believed that they come from another plane, or are manifestations of negative energy. Phantoms can cause you to hallucinate, which is what they like to do to mess with their target right before they decide to possess them. They also like their target to feel a sense of fear or will cause fear to anyone traveling with their target in an attempt to separate them. They will try anything to lure their target closer, gain their trust, create a false life.
Most phantoms are found in dark old places, such as cemeteries or old abandoned buildings. Though if a murder had taken place then there is a higher of a likely hood of a phantom. No matter the location watch out for the signs of them, which are ghost orbs floating around, dropping temperatures, a sudden feeling of dread, and seeing things in the dark.
Now I should warn you about possession and how to know if you are being possessed. At the start you will experience a very painful headache, which will be followed by fatigue and exhaustion, these are early signs and it is best to contact a cleric, preferably if you start to feel these. After that, you will start to get tremors and twitches, which is then leads to having seizures, by this point, it is too late you are possessed. If you are traveling with anyone it is up to them to contain you and take you to a cleric to rid of the phantom.
there is a way to ward off phantoms, either temporarily or permanently. Temporarily getting rid of a phantom by burning sage or placing salt around the area you wish to be in. The reasoning to do this temporarily is if you visiting let's say old ruins, well permanently will cause the phantom to either go somewhere else and become a danger to another person. Permanently will cause the phantom to be pushed into another plane, not sure where that is, but assuming it's where they are from.

My Own Experience

1848
I once almost got possessed by a phantom, but luckily I had a cleric traveling with me. We were hearing rumors of an abandoned hospital, how there is a serial killer that is located there. So we both went to the building only to find a phantom, though I should have caught it sooner. I tried to talk to it, but would only stare at me, which was odd because I have never had a spirit disappear on me like that. This is the only experience I have had with this type of spirit and to be honest, I don't want to run into another one.

Poltergeists

The most common spirit to find in a building, though they can be harmless, they can also be harmful. These are the only spirit that can interact with Material Plane objects and not be able to walk through walls or closed doors. Most poltergeists don't like it when people invade their territory or they don't like someone, making become almost wraith-like, but the only thing they can do is throw objects. Poltergeists can also become violent when in a disagreement with their living attachment or if that living attachment is with someone they don't like or approve of.
Now how do you know your or home is haunted by a poltergeist, well, floating objects is a good way of knowing, though that comes later on when the poltergeist is a little less shy. The early onset way of knowing is handprints being left on objects, smudges on any metal, or footsteps. Speaking of footsteps, hearing them when no one else is supposed to be in the building is a good way of knowing or doors closing and opening.
Now how to rid of a poltergeist, clerics, though Seekers are better for these kinds of jobs, but burning sage will burn the poltergeist and cause them to flee. Though that does not mean they won't come back.

My Own Experience

1849
I have a poltergeist attached to me, she has a tendency to throw things at people for saying things that upset her, or if she just does not like the person. She also tends to slam doors. She seems to hold more of a form then my spirit professor. She is fifteen years old, with a pumpkin for a head.

Lament

The saddest and loneliness spirits out there, they are also known as depressed spirits and can often be seen by those that are not seekers, mostly just them standing around. These spirits are able to teleport and even whisper to people, mostly it's a cry for help, but it can get into the head of anyone. Though it's a cry for help, these spirits give depressing energy and cause weak-willed people to become depressed, though not the fault of Lament, they can't help that energy.
You know one is around when there the temperatures drop, ghost orbs, a glimpse of a person, sounds of whispers that almost sound like crying or whimpering, or confession, and finally the feeling of sudden depression. These spirits were once a living person with struggles that most likely lead them to take their own life or a spirit that found out a harsh truth and felt helpless. They never mean to cause harm and only want to be helped.
You could get a cleric, but the best thing to do morally is to get a seeker, though it's okay if you don't. Seekers are rare, so don't feel too bad when contacting a cleric. Though you can calm it by burning herbs that are known to be calming and help people to distress. You could also try talking to it, but the conversation will be one-sided. Just please be careful and make sure if you're going to a place known for suicide that you have a strong will or have a person that also has a strong will to ward off the influence of a lament spirit.

My Own Experience

1841
This is also another spirit that I don't come across often, my sister pointed out this one. My entire family was out going for a walk, though was cut short because my mother was feeling down. The spirit was following us, asking for help, crying out. The aura she gave us made the air feel heavy and gloomy. Both of us wishes we could do something, but we also knew our parents did not approve of our abilities. The spirit was harder to identify, but she wore a long black dress and hand sickly skin.

Anomalies

oh boy, anomalies, these guys are very scary and very dangerous. No two anomalies are alike, their behavior differs depending on how they passed away, but most of the time something odd happens around the area that they died in. It's hard to explain, but I guess the most common thing that happens is disappearances, I have seen anomalies cause all sorts of weird things, but one is for sure is that they lose their form, becoming unseen beasts, or some alien lifeform that does not belong here. You can't really kill them, not permanently, but enough to get away, luckily they can't leave their area. Though if you do come into contact with an anomaly, leave the area immediately.
How to tell if there is an anomaly, well like I had said, their behavior depends on how they died, how they felt, and their personality. This is what makes them very unpredictable and hard to spot, but there are a few ways that all anomalies have, these are mostly out of their control. Dropping temperatures, though this can match with any of the other spirits, you can still figure it out by seeing creatures, most likely out of the corner of your eye, nightmares of how someone died, or by rumors and legends.
AVOID ANOMALIES AT ALL COSTS!!!! If you hear about something strange or odd, that can only be explained by the supernatural, do not go at least not without a cleric or seeker. Seekers are best because at least we can see the spirit coming. Hell, even clerics should never go in alone and bring a paladin, do not under any circumstances do this without some sort of help, and do not go alone. Remember they are unpredictable, they will kill you and it will not be pretty as some like to torment and torture their prey, you are not a target, you are prey. The worst part is that afterward, they will consume your spirit and after that good luck getting resurrected, your gonna need true resurrection.

My Own experience

1844
This is the one where the anomaly was controlling the wraith. The first anomaly I have run into and the most dangerous. My sister and I heard that there was a person that was trespassing in the abandoned building on top of a hill, so naturally, we check it out. This anomaly trapped us in the house, caused us to fall through floors and sent wraiths after us. I was almost down, but my sister sacrificed herself so I could escape, I saw the wraith kill her and I saw the anomaly consume her spirit.
1849
This one was not that bad but still scary. I went into a town that had a legend of people disappearing in the pumpkin patch nearby for 200 years. The legend was that if you entered the pumpkin patch at night you would disappear and your body would be fused to the inside of pumpkins. Many people believe it to be necromancers, or some lich was at work. Well, that theory is wrong, it was just a 15-year-old girl who was murdered by a serial killer about 200 years ago. I was able to find her body and put it rest, I then comforted her, and the anomaly dissipated, turning into a poltergeist that now follows me around.

Revenant

Zombie-like are classified as a vengeful spirit, these entities have met a cruel and undeserved death. They possess corpses which give them a bit of a zombie look, they will also know the distance of their target. Revenants only target those who had killed them and assisted, starting with the person that gave the killing hit. Not all the time are revenants able to kill their target, so some may look for some help. If you wish to kill the revenant, well no form of attack will fully kill a revenant they will always find a new corpse to possess and continue their hunt, the only way is to use the spell wish.
You can tell if a person is a revenant if they look a bit undead, feel cold to the touch or if the air around them is colder than it should be, those are the only signs. Now there are also signs for if you're being hunted down by a revenant, but they are often brushed off to the side. Targets will get nightmares, not easily remembered, and will have frequent thoughts about the scene, which is often confused as regret.

My Own Experience

1843
I have only ever come across one, My sister and I were happy to help this person to rest. We were out looking for our next job, when a zombie looking person came up to us, the smell was not the best. He asked us to help him find his murder, which we did, was in our town. Though at the time we did not use magic all that much, we did our best. Funny enough most spirits are attracted to us, but not revenants.
I once had to tell a party member to stop playing dead when a spiriting is going after us, I have said it once, twice, and I will say it 100 times over.
