Afterlife

What happens when a person dies? well, there are many outcomes depending on the person and what they believe in. Some become a lingering spirit, haunting their last spot they died in, some become vengeful, haunting whatever killed them last. Now, what about where does a person go? Well, there are four total places, one to the city of judgment, which would lead to two different outcomes which will be explained later. Alternatively, there is the Ethereal plane which will also talk about more later on. There are ways to contact the dead, though not recommended by any church, without the aid of magic as they can be dangerous.

Where do the Dead go

The living will debate on where it is that they go, some believing they will go to their worshipped deity, to forever roam the fugue Plane, that nothing happens, you just stop existing, or that the deads spirits will roam the lands of where they died. The answer to where you go is all of the above. A dead person can become stuck though not just limited to a location but can be stuck to a person, though most end up going the Fugue Plane and then finds themselves at the gates of the City of Judgment. If a person worshipped a deity, depending on how closely they followed would determine if they go to the domain of that deity, though if they have failed then the spirit will be sent to the abyss. If there the spirit never worshipped when alive or has left the faith then they go to the Ethereal Plane. For a spirit to stop existing the soul would have to be destroyed which is not an easy task, though happens more often to demons and devils than to any mortal being.

Ethereal Plane

Fragments of the Ethereal Plane can be seen on the Material Plane, but only if a person has at least semi-Truesight. Within those fragments are created when a person dies, leaving behind either their last memory or the most important memory of the once-living person. If more then one person dies in the spot then the fragments will meld together, forming memories that overlap, though these fragments have a lifespan of 10 years before they start fading and will be completely gone by the 5th year mark. The actual Plane houses ghosts that did not worship a deity or became faithless. Not all spirits are aware they are dead, so some places of the Plane has spirits living their life as if nothing happened, meanwhile others reform to a new life of being dead. The Ethereal Plane is a light blue with a ghostly appearance, though this is only seen this way by those with Truesight, the dead see everything as a solid, just like how we view the Material Plane.

Fugue Plane

The only way to get to this plane is once a person is no longer living. Though not all who die are aware they are dead and are more likely to end up in the Fugue Plane. After a week of wandering around, the spirit will be taken to the City of Judgment, where The god of death, Kelemvor resides. Once the spirit makes it to the City of Judgement Kelemvor will make a judgment based on the morals and ideals of the spirits deity. If the spirit has been proven to be faithful to their deity then they are taken to that deities domain. A spirit who has strayed from their deities path will be sent to either the Abyss or Nine Hells, where they will either become a tortured soul or a fiend. Faithless spirits that wander in only get one warning that they are not welcomed, if they continue to the City of Judgment they will end up becoming trapped in the Fugue Plane. Everything is bland, void of vibrant colors, and is mostly grays whites, and blacks. The faithless souls appear with a solid white outline and everything inside that outline is a ghostly transparent white.

Roaming Spirits

Spirits that have strong emotions normally remain in the Material Plane, though if they don't know if they have died then they may end up wondering into the fugue Plane. Experiencing a strong feeling of attachment or unfulfillment are two of the most common reasons that a spirit may remain with a person or place, but the most common is out of spite or revenge. Spirits that are evil or died by the hands of an enemy may become vengeful.

Attachments and Unfulfillment

Some example of a spirit stay for attachment is if they died but was not yet ready to leave behind the person they love or care for so they stay with them. The spirit would protect the person from vengeful spirits until they pass away, or the spirit is ready to move on. These spirits are more likely to leave either the most recent memory of that person or place or the most memorable memory of that person or place. An example of attachment to a place would be a person that is detected to their home or business. If they worked hard to get their home or shop and feel a sense of pride, they may stay in that location, if the building where to get destroyed and then rebuilt into something else, the spirit may turn vengeful.
Unfulfillment towards a person would be like if a person never got to tell a person how much they cared or loved them, or revealed a secret that was desperately needed to be said, or they did not do what they wanted to do with that person and heavily regret it. they will follow the person around trying to fulfill their desire, though would not be able to until they are either strong enough or a cleric manages to speak to them, all of these things are highly unlikely to happen. These spirits are more likely to leave behind wishful memories, things that they wish could have turned out to be, or things they regret never doing or achieving.

Vengeful Spirits

Anger filled spirits cause a lot of problems for a person or a location. The person who is being haunted will at first feel nothing, but as the vengeful spirit feeds off the negative energy they may grow stronger. With enough power, a ghost may start devouring another spirit, causing that spirit to be destroyed, thus ending the existence of that spirit. After devouring five spirits the vengeful spirit will start to turn into a wraith, afterward, each spirit devoured will add to the power of the wraith and cause them to become more tangible, at this point the spirit can be fought by the living.

What makes a Vengeful Spirit

There are many factors that may make a person a vengeful spirit, a person alignment will add to their likelihood of becoming a vengeful spirit, though a modifier should never be higher than 10%. Though an alignment can have an effect it can either be nullified or amplified depending on the last emotion or. Let's say that a person who is chaotic evil, which would already start out with a 10% chance of them becoming a vengeful spirit, dies thinking that his plans have been foiled, that would raise the chance to maybe a 10% making a total of a 20% chance of a vengeful spirit and would follow the person that gave the killing blow. Now, if the spirit knows that there is some either higher or a successor that would carry on with their plans, that would take away half of the modifier, so if it's at a 10% it would go to being a 5%, rounding up.

If a spirit who has an attachment and that attachment either ends up betraying or gets destroyed then the spirit will turn into a vengeful spirit, will attach themselves to whatever was the cause of the anger. A similar thing can happen with unfulfillment. If the goals become unachievable the spirit may become a vengeful spirit, though there is a chance of a depressed spirit as well.

Effects of a Vengeful Spirit

In the beginning, a vengeful spirit will encourage a person to do bad things, just so it can feed off the of it to become stronger. there are four tiers of strength.
Tier 1
The spirit is able to make people feel their presence and is able to only pick up lightweight items.
Tier 2
Things start to get a scarier as the spirit is now able to pick up heavier items and move them around and even throw things, though not violently.
Tier 3
The spirit now can stand a chance against the more benevolent spirits and can also throw items more violently and appears in nightmares.
Tier 4
The spirit can do a lot, able to throw things, mess with any sort of electrical tech, and can even start appearing as a shadowy figure looming in the dark.
There is a difference when a spirit devours another and grows stronger. When a spirit eats another the one that gets devoured ends up becoming part of its preditor and no longer exists as it's own entity and loses most of its identity. The benefit is that the vengeful spirit gets to be one step closing to being able to attack and kill the person or destroy the location that holds it's final memories. Though vengeful spirits are not the only ones that can devour another, a matter of fact any spirit can if they are strong enough, which benevolent spirit has a bit of an advantage with strength, they always start out at tier 2, while a vengeful starts out at tier 1. The goal of a vengeful spirit is always to kill or destroy what they are angry about, but there are often times other ways to quell these spirits.

Depressed Spirits

Often times these spirits died with an intense feeling of sadness, depression, or loneliness. Most of these spirits come to be from a person that had committed suicide, though not all the time, some might have died with their goals incomplete and are not able to complete, or a spirit becomes a depressed spirit because they had failed to fulfill or lost what was theirs and they were not an aggressive person. These types of spirits are the weakest in terms of being able to interact with the Material Plane, mainly because they affect people emotionally and this causes other spirits to be warded off. When a depressed spirit is present the living person will also feel the sorrow of the spirit if a persons will is weak enough they may become depressed. This is the reason some places why some places are more known for suicides.
