Doctor Profession in Valleris | World Anvil

Doctor

In the world of Valleris, particularly in Druna, doctors are undervalued. Many have gone through extensive years of training, whether through traditional educational institutions, apprenticeships, or communion with the holy arts (a practice that is less and less public these days). They work hard at the healing houses and hospitals throughout the land, tending to the sick and ensuring that they return to good health. Otherwise, they do their best to give the dying patient some peace.   On the flip side, there is a quiet pressure from those who fund the healing houses, as well as the local governors, to ensure that someone is "in good health" whether or not they are going to make it out of the healing house. Although no one feels comfortable enough to say it aloud, the pressure is likely coming from the several veins of necromantic influence that are spilling throughout the society. Some doctors have taken to making nervous half-jokes with their patients, along the lines of, "If you don't take care of yourself, you'll just fall apart when they raise you!"   The more outspoken doctors have said that they went into this profession because they wanted to help people, but now they feel that they're a machine pushing the latest cure and unfounded salves in order to satisfy an expectation of healthy dead people for purchase. They are pressured to sell and prescribe different concoctions, almost at the whim of experimenting necromancers who are trying to weasel their way past the lawful decrees against immoral magical practices.   Necromancers are bound by the laws that prevent them from experimenting on Soulcages prior to expiration, but some are using doctors as a loophole by feigning to be alchemical organizations with the latest cure for certain things. Some of these alchemical concoctions are really just fluids to prepare a dead subject for raising.   Because of this, there is a growing distrust and misunderstanding of the medical professions, particularly doctors. Some people believe that they're really just the necromancers' lackeys, and others are still trying to hold onto their faith that these people are doing their best to help the living.
