Curse of Hanazur

When the gods smote Hanazur, their wrath lingered as a corruption which seeped into the land and life of the region. To this day, travel through many regions of the Barbed Coast requires expensive magical protection. Those who enter these forbidden places ill-prepared may find themselves rotting alive and eventually becoming one of the Cursebound.

Causes

The Curse of Hanazur is acquired by lingering too long in the vicinity of the city and certain nearby Attan ruins. Briefly entering these areas may be harmless, but remaining for a day or longer will almost certainly allow the Curse to take hold.

Symptoms

The first symptom of the Curse is typically nausea, headache, and fatigue. As the Curse progresses, the victim's hair begins to fall out, and wounds stop healing and become more prone to infection.

Treatment

Casting remove curse can delay the progression of the Curse, but there is no known cure.

Prognosis

With regular castings of remove curse, one can live with the Curse of Hanazur for quite a while. If left untreated, the victim's wounds will inevitably stop healing and become more prone to infection, eventually leading to death. Three days after death, the victim will rise as a Cursebound.

Prevention

The Curse can be prevented by wearing a full suit of specially warded armor. Unfortunately, suits are difficult and expensive to obtain. Most commonly these suits are in the possession of wizards' colleges, although they rarely own more than one or two.

History

The first people afflicted by the Curse were the refugees who had fled Hanazur after the Dracomachy. Many blamed the actions of the refugees for their affliction, but it was soon discovered among looters and soldiers from other civilizations who had spent time among the ruins of Hanazur. Presently, most of those who contract the Curse are arcane scholars, pilgrims, and Followers of the Unhidden Path.
