Anomalous Entities

Hidden throughout the world are objects or creatures of interest that exist outside the rules of nature. Even extraterrestrial scientists have been known to study Anomalous Entities, baffling the human scientists who have even less knowledge about what such things could be.

The definition of what can be considered an Anomalous Entity is vague, but follows a simple rule; if there exists an object or creature which defies the natural laws as are currently understood, it may fall under the umbrella term 'Anomalous Entity'. This guideline ensures that magic is accounted for in the defining of such items, as some magic is understood well enough to have laws that can be considered natural and logical. In the case of Constructs for example, the magic of giving inanimate objects life is well-known in the sense that it happens often and follows the same 'rules' each time. In that sense, a living, intelligent rock creature or a talking paperclip is unremarkable. By contrast, an Anomalous Entity may not make any sense at all, even by what magic allows.      Examples of Anomalous Entities are helpful for understanding how to apply the 'rule' to other objects an creatures. A bowl of ice-cream that instantly refills itself when not being observed is considered Anomalous, as one example. Another example might be a cockroach that, no matter what, cannot be squashed; no matter the level of force applied. Both of these examples can be found in the world, existing outside the boundaries of what nature will normally allow, and are oftentimes unique. (More examples can be found in the footnotes of this article.)      Things that may be considered Anomalous Entities may one day be well-understood by the scientific community at large, which will then strip the object or creature of its 'Anomalous' status. This happens occasionally as fields of science and the understanding of the universe evolves. One such example is the simple Concoction, which was at one point considered Anomalous, until further research showed reliable means of reproducing the 'Anomalous' behavior and it instead became a field of hybrid-science that is still being explored today.

More examples of Anomalous Entities:

  • A tarot card deck that has the standard number of cards, each unremarkable when turned over as a group, but when shuffled into a deck and turned over so that each face is hidden, will always draw the Death card, even multiple times in a row.
  • A humanoid creature that knows details on every single question it is asked, even personal details or future events that nobody should be able to learn/predict, which instead much prefers to talk about mundane things, such as the weather.
  • A hammerhead that will turn anything it impacts with into mild picante salsa.

Alternative names:

Subject of Study; Delta Entity; Object(s) of Interest; Anomaly; Artifact
Note: the above alternate names are primarily used by differing organizations. Internally, each organization has their own term for Anomalous Entities, which they will consistently use.
