Ridgegate Settlement in Uto Daeg | World Anvil

Ridgegate

A distant bell rings out three times, designating the time. The wind continues to whip down the emptying streets. The air is crisp with snow's promise. Slayer tugs at his cloak, hugging it a little tighter to keep warm in the lonely streets. He keeps pace well with his companion, minding your speed, a paternal stride.   The city of Ridgegate is situated on three elevations, a lower section with the main gate, a middle, and an upper. The upper houses the keep, which rests on a small hill. The elevation is natural, Ridgegate on the cusp of the Lower Divide that breaks up the Lowlands from the Midlands. A similar divide also designates the Midlands from the Highlands where Dalth'it, Deep Golog, and Hlee are located.

Large fortress Ridgegate straddles the eastern pass in the Northwall cliffs. It used to be a stronghold to protect upper Evoria from lower Evoria or Riverlanders, but now it serves as station of troops.   The acting high-guard, the Veldsaen, wear purple scarfs that cover the mouths with high, visorless helms. Intricate, scaled gauntlets and black and navy capes complete their ensemble. The captain of the guard, Guyess, is an old veteran of the King's Force, Ridgegate being a holdout against the Democracy. He is stern . Normally, a good leader, never making his soldiers do what he would not. Appointed Jaenis as his second, a good mature woman who helps bring out his tender side. She has received numerous accolades from Duke and Duchess Ellinsworth on account for her superb martial melee skill. Has a sharp voice that tests the patience of the guards, but the instruction is always precise.   In this section of Kormice, the yellow plains give way to hills and forest to the northwest and northeast, cliffs to the south. Being the gateway to the Highland, it is heavily policed. The custom of examining everyone is diminishing, being no longer a law, though more stealthy types may bypass this obstruction.   The other religions there pertain to the Order of the Gauntlet and its worshipers. Unfortunatley, as of Midautumn 2707 the Lord-Duke and Lady-Duchess banished the Order of the Gauntlet to some remote and crumbling fort on the other side of Floe Wood and the Gologian Mountains. For now, the several blocks devoted to the Order of the Gauntlet are freshly empty, making way for more people to move in, and other activities.   The common food dishes here are hearty, grainy, and meaty. Some vegetables, but mostly breads of all kinds and deliciously, succulent meats, though not as delectable as Elysia .

Government

Duke Galenluanon and Duchess Talaesse Ellinsworth rule militarily under Manaron's blessing. Stern but just, rules are very much enforced.

Defences

Low, fat stone wall eight feet thick. Catapults and archers survey the top of the wall day in and day out.

Industry & Trade

Supplied mostly by Manaron in exchange for soldiers. Uses grain and timber, but mostly traveling fees from those using the Ridgegate to cross the Northwall.

Infrastructure

Windmills outside the stone walls, watermills in the couple of streams nearby. Stables, armory, smithy, and fletcher abound in this military town.

Assets

Place to sign up for the army in the Kormice, Corridor, and Tambux regions. Housed the Order of the Gauntlet until Aftautumn 2707 when Kosdos Makarnon from Yym ordered their departure to some forgotten fortress on the West March, the dark eastern side of the Gologian Mountains.

Guilds and Factions

Manaron's King Force army. The Order of the Gauntlet (now moved to other side of Gologian Mountains).

History

Originally used as a defensible wall between lower and upper Evoria, Ridgegate eventually lost its need as military defender and now acts as military base of operations and town-sized barracks.

Architecture

The streets are of large, flat, gray stones, interlocking in no distinct pattern. The buildings are made of tan, red, or yellow brick; roofs of the buildings are steep but low due to snow storms that blow through the Highland to the Midland from the Gologian Mountains.   Not much flair other than obvious comparisons to a derivative of Hlee's architecture. Sits on a slope so city is tiered into three layers.

Geography

Sloped, but mostly without inhibiting obstacles like trees. Sits on the plains of Kormice between northwestern and eastern forests and hills. Cliffs to the south with the eponymous gate on the ridge that leads to the city.

Natural Resources

Some farmland, but nothing as fertile as the Breadbasket in Tambux or southern Elysia.
