Redgasp
Transmission & Vectors
Primary transmission is through the air
Also transmissible through blood
Causes
Unknown
Symptoms
Coughing, starting mildly then becoming worse until it becomes nearly-constant, taking approximately two weeks
Lung Lesions, aggravated by coughing, that eventually fill the lungs with blood. This process starts after ten days. This usually kills the host within a week.
Anemia, due to blood loss, can also be expressed, but this is unlikely due to the fast acting nature of the bleeding.
Treatment
No treatment has yet been discovered due to the disease's emergent nature
Prognosis
Survival after blood begins to fill the lungs is unlikely
Before then, detection can be difficult due to the primary symptom being a mild cough
Sequela
If a person were to survive after expressing the second stage of the disease, they would likely suffer from anemia, as well as permanent lung damage.
Affected Groups
Redgasp affects almost all humanoids and human cultures. Motorists, Great Lakers, New Orleanians, Elites*, Military Remnants, Bunker Adapted*, Elves**, Dwarves, Halflings*, Atlanteans**, Gas Monks**, West Coastal, Wanderer**, Gnomes, Orcs*, and Ratfolk*** all had an infected population of at least 10 confirmed cases.
Georgian Mutants, Dragons, and Great Colony members were all confirmed to be immune.
*These populations were particularly badly affected, with Stage Two beginning in as few as three days from the expression of the first symptoms
**These populations seem to have some natural resistance, reducing the likelihood of Stage Two expressing, and delaying it for up to two weeks
***While Ratfolk did become ill, their population had exactly 10 confirmed cases, 7 of which survived
Hosts & Carriers
Georgian Mutants can act as carriers for Redgasp. However, without an active source of blood, the virus dies after ten days
There are no animal carriers due to the purpose of the disease
Prevention
Avoiding contact with the infected is the primary method of prevention. Quarantine protocols should be applied to suspected cases for twelve days to either confirm infection or allow time for Redgasp to die.
Epidemiology
Unknown
History
First recorded in Chicago in the summer of 227
