Motorist
While the culture of the Motorists is difficult to separate from their religion, there are several aspects of their lives that have come about from circumstance rather than belief. Their nomadism is one of these, though it partially originates in their misunderstanding of the timeline for the formation of oil. It is likely that rather than wanting to start any traditions, their ancestors were simply scavengers that banded together over time, travelling in whatever vehicles they could scavenge, and their current beliefs developed over generations of travelling and hostility from the other major factions in those early years.
Naming Traditions
Family names
Shinepane, Chromebody, Glasseye, and Steeldoor are examples of names for older families, but newer ones are more likely to have names more similar to those of the USPA
Culture
Major language groups and dialects
While the primary Motorist language is English, their origin in Texas also lead to the origin of the Motorist language, sometimes known as Mexan. A pidgin of Mexican Spanish and Southern English, it is rarely known outside of Motor City, and few would teach it to outsiders. It is primarily used in the ceremonies of Motor Dualism, and among the elders of the Motorists.
Art & Architecture
While the mobile nature of Motor City somewhat limits the classic forms of art, the customization of vehicles is one of the major forms of expression amongst the Motorists. This is far removed from past customization, and ranges from elaborate murals that can only be understood while travelling over rough terrain to trying to fit as many technological improvements into a vehicle while still retaining the majority of its original appearance.
Coming of Age Rites
Generally Motorists are considered of age at 16, as according to ancient tradition that is the age that one can begin driving. The winter after they reach this age they journey from Dallas to Houston to partake in a vigil at the ancient Mission Control building from December 31st to January 1st, believing that sometime in the future a group will be chosen to journey to the stars.
Funerary and Memorial customs
If the dead have remaining family, they are transferred as quickly as possible to one of two places. If they were Solarists, the bodies are moved to the highest point that can be found before the next sunset following their death, and must be placed atop it, or as closely as possible, before the next dawn. If this is not done in time, the elders say, they may not return to the sun to replenish it.
Followers of the Deep Fire have more variable practices, the the most common is cremation, to return the body to the fire, and the ashes are then buried. However, those that die in battle are given a higher honor, and are anointed with oil before being buried as deeply as possible, to hopefully one day grow into a fresh reserve of the divine fuel.
