Chicago
Chicago, capital of the Lakes Confederacy, is inhabited by beings from all corners of North America. From the West-Coastals fleeing Draconic rule to Atlanteans banished from their home for some unknown wrong, to the Ratfolk communities in the underground, it truly is the epitome of the ideals set forth by the Master of None thirty years ago. I hear there's even a family or two of Bigfeet all the way from what's left of Vancouver.
From the capital building, formerly the Field Museum, to the re-founded University of Chicago and Chicago Airport, the city has begun growing again, with the help of the Motorists who summer to the south. In addition, the city has attracted a large number of the people known as Wanderers, who have settled there due to the lack of persecution and the safety provided by the city. Recently the Master of the Southlake Jurisdiction was even announced to be a Wanderer.
However, not all is good in the post-apocalypse, and the city has begun to experience some of the historical problems with gathering large numbers of people together, particularly disease. While it has not yet become too widespread, the new disease "Redgasp" is worryingly dangerous to those infected, and with limited supplies of medicine, there is no telling what could occur in the coming winter.
Demographics
Due to it's status as capital city of the Lakes Confederacy and the largest city in the region, the demographics are fairly proportional to the Confederacy as a whole, though it does contain most of the recorded Ratfolk.
Government
While it is the seat of the Lake Confederacy's government, Chicago has it's own mayor, a young but charismatic New Orleanian, and city government, both of which are eager to uphold the image of Chicago as a perfect city.
Defences
As the capital city, there is a sizable military presence ensuring the safety of the city, ensuring that there are about 1.200 soldiers active at any time, as well as a fairly skilled group of police.
Industry & Trade
Chicago remains as a major transportation hub, and contains the primary market of external goods in the Lakes Confederacy.
Infrastructure
Chicago is one of the few places to have a somewhat restored network of paved roads, and construction continues to work away from the lake, restoring or demolishing buildings to make more of the city livable.
Guilds and Factions
Political factions from each Jurisdiction
Trade and Exploration Guild: The TE Guild has been vital in sending envoys to small settlements nearby to establish communication and minor trade
The Supernatural Guild: Founded by a group of youths gifted with a variety of mystical powers, this guild provides a place for training magical talents and sharing knowledge about the stranger parts of the new world. It is estimated that they have about 100 psychics, 30 druids, and a dozen independent channelers.
History
Originally ruined in the Salem Panic of 5 AE, Chicago remained mostly in this state for nearly 200 years, barring a few intermittent settlements, it was refounded with the foundation of the Lakes Confederacy and has been in a state of constant rebuilding for 30 years, with thousands flocking to it from the prior petty kingdoms. Since then, even more have begun moving from a number of places. 20 years ago was the Coastal Migration, when some tyranny or another drove nearly 30.000 West Coastals to migrate to Chicago. About 10 years ago was the Wanderer Settling, when about 13.000 Wanderers somehow coordinated arriving in the city in a trickle over the entire year.
