Lakes Confederacy
Founded only thirty years ago, the Lakes Confederacy has since become the primary power of the Great Lakes. Emerging from nearly a dozen warring kingdoms and led by a mysterious man that some think is an exile from a mysterious organization from the distant south, the Lakes are surprisingly stable despite the mystical threats of the Witchlands and the Appalachians to the East, and the poorly known and minimally inhabited wasteland to the West. Currently governed by the elected leaders of the former kingdoms, now known as Jurisdictions, the Lakes will soon be facing the greatest test of their unity yet...
Structure
The Lakes Confederacy is split into ten Jurisdictions with equal power in legislation, but each is focused on a particular aspect of government.

Public Agenda
To establish a new country from the distant ashes of the United States and Canada around the Great Lakes.
Assets
Possessing almost the entirety of the Great Lakes besides Lake Ontario and the eastern end of Lake Erie provides massive amounts of fresh water relatively cheaply. In addition, natural copper and silver can be found in abundance in the Superior and Yooper Jurisdictions. Various fruits are still grown here, some now extinct in other places. Lumber is also in abundance after centuries of limited use.
History
Established within living memory, the Lakes Confederacy was founded after the conclusion of a series of bloody wars between the major powers of the region, leaving the people wanting peace, and allowing for a mysterious and charismatic leader to overthrow the previous petty kings and establish a democratic form of government, dividing the organization and resources of the government so that no one region could dominate the others.
Since then, the second generation of the Lakes have begun opening up the region to trade, hoping to attract people with knowledge of what goes on beyond their lands, and to pursue rumors of an organization dedicated to the preservation of human knowledge.
Demography and Population
Approximately 5.000.000 people live in the Lakes Confederacy. A census program is currently being established to find a more accurate count, and the following numbers are primarily estimates.
Great Lakers: 4.600.000
Bunker Adapted: 75.000
Military Remnant: 70.000
Atlanteans (Various Castes): 60.000
West Coastal: 45.000
Elves: 25.000
Wanderer (Ironically, Permanently Settled): 20.000
Georgian Mutants (US Battle Mutants): 10.000
Dwarves: 7.500
Halflings: 5.000
Elites: 5.000
Gas Monks: 5.000
Gnomes: 2.500
Far Consin Great Colony Outpost: 50.000
Motorists and New Orleanians: 10.000
Ratfolk and Orcs: 10.000
Technological Level
Thanks to a large group of banished Atlanteans, the technology level of the Lakes is superior to the remnant United States to the south, but below that of New Orleans due to the lack of atlantean materials and power sources.
Religion
While having no official state religion, in an attempt to emulate the old United States by allowing freedom to practice any religion, the majority of population is split fairly evenly between various sects of Christianity and Treeism. The Atlanteans of Green Bay practice Hellenism, and there is still a small population of people who follow Old Islam.
Agriculture & Industry
Copper and silver mining are important industries to the economy of the Lakes Confederacy
Fruit agriculture is also fairly important, but has limited exports due to the restricted availability of refrigeration beyond the borders
Trade & Transport
Since the establishment of a Brass Dollar as a nationally recognized currency, there has been prevalent trading between Motor City and the Lakes Confederacy, exchanging water for some of the city's surplus of Zinc, as well as limited amounts of oil and it's byproducts.
There have been three trade missions so far to the West, trying to find a stable agreement with the Mormon State of Deseret to exchange salt for a more stable supply of fresh water, and as much fruit as will last the journey.
Education
A public education system has been more or less implemented in most of the Jurisdictions.
Green Bay is generally better educated than most of the other jurisdictions, due to the Atlantean Population.
Infrastructure
The Mackinac Bridge was mostly destroyed by 85 AE, but several towers remain standing, allowing for a rather narrow string of bridges to be laid after some reinforcements to the towers. A project has been started to begin the construction of a more permanent structure, but there have been some problems in renovating steel plants that has delayed the construction.
The roads are primarily dirt, except for the most major routes, which are usually mostly paved.
Indoor plumbing and sewage networks have been mostly re-established
There are a few airports, but the limited supplies of fuel restrict non-military usage.
