Mercy's Healing

"The idea was for there to be a central place, one where doctors and nurses could compare and share knowledge. What ends up happening is that we collect all the information here, and we have all the equipment needed for wings, tails, extra appendages, and all that. Us having all of it means that a hospital that can help those with human bodies can stop spending money on items it doesn't use often and spend that money on things to help their patients. It's not, as some people think, discrimination. It's making sure that our loved ones have the best care they can get."    Opening ceremony quote from the PR director of Mercy's Healing.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of providing a hospital that mainly caters to non-humans was due to cost. Having each hospital in the area need to buy multiple, for example, bedpans that would work with beings who had tails, who weighed more than an average human, etc. costs money. Not just in buying the item, but in storing the item too (extra room is needed for the hospital).    The heads of the hospitals got together and decided to dedicate a new hospital, Mercy's Healing, to those who were more than the average human. While the hospital could, and does, treat humans, it was built to accommodate beings with wings, multiple appendages, tails, claws, etc.    As a bonus, the doctors and nurses who are employed in this hospital can gather information and pool their resources. Keeping the information on the computer allows other hospitals to access it so that they can treat health issues that don't need specialized equipment (scale rot, for instance).

Design

Most rooms are designed to be extra wide and extra tall (which is one of the reasons why the hospital is designed to have "only" seven floors above ground level; each of them are slightly bigger than average).    Rooms tend to be on the square side for patient recovery, and more rectangular when it comes to patient operation/surgery.    Material for floors, walls, and ceilings is basic stone, wood, and wallpaper. In the places where operations are performed, the material is easy to clean, hose down, etc. In places where a patient is in bed for a longer time, or a patient comes for being checked on, "normal" wallpaper is used to create a soothing atmosphere. Colors are different for each floor so that doctors and nurses can easily tell where they are/need to be when they are helping on different floors.

Entries

Each patient room has one window, wide and either overlooking the greenery at the back of the hospital (long term patients), or overlooking the small bit of greenery at the front of the hospital (short term patients).   Windows are sealed by spell to only open during an emergency or to let in a bit of air. During an emergency, only levels 1-3 will open and allow a patient to (literally) drop down to the ground floor. For higher levels, the windows will only open for air.   There is worry about the main entrances being arches (and therefore not having doors that can be barred, locked, or reinforced), but people are hoping that being a hospital will prevent attacks. (This remains to be seen.) Patient doors can be locked and barricaded, along with the storage and operation rooms, so there is a sense of safety in the idea that, if there ever was an attack, people can be in those rooms until security/police come to help.

Sensory & Appearance

There is a mix of spells and potions that are placed around the hospital. This combination draws from the potion (which contains the scent) and spreads it around the room to gently greet people (also does double duty in removing as much of the sanitation smell as possible). Lighting is kept at a soothing level (no overbrightness or buzzing),   The hospital is kept, overall, at a slightly warm temperature, but patients can choose (to a degree), how their room's temperature is (warm or cool, but not hot or cold unless the patient's body requires that extreme).   All in all, the hospital has been made to be as welcoming as possible and in the cases of some beings, to be as unfrightening as possible as well. (Like how kids hospitals try to be bright and cheerful.)

Denizens

The beings "haunting" this institute are primarily doctors, nurses, ambulance crews, and a few other people whose jobs are related to making sure patients are being cared for (child protection services, mental health consultants, etc.)

Contents & Furnishings

The contents and furnishings of a hospital are too much to list in one area, but there are a variety of ways to sit in the lounge (circular chair, couch with no back, etc.). Other items include the basic necessities every hospital needs, such as bedpans, beds, linens, trays for meals, etc.

Valuables

The most valuable items in the hospital are pieces of equipment (which cost a lot of money) and the healing potions/medicines/spell components.   This is one reason that some higher-ups have expressed concern over the fact that there are no doors barring entrance to the hospital. While it's a good thing that they look "welcoming and open to everyone," they also worry that someone will (eventually), come in to steal the most valuable portable items.   The paintings on the wall are done by local artists, and if a patient wants to buy them they can - and then another local artist can make another painting to hang in the room or hallway.

Special Properties

The "special properties" this hospital is embedded with are the current stage of tech, spells, and a few combinations of potions/spells that work especially well together (such as an atmosphere diffusor, etc.). There are several mixtures when working with healing - for example, a patient might be tended to with medicine first (stop the bleeding), a potion (quick blood replenishment), and a spell (diagnosis check to see if there is anymore bleeding).

Alterations

No alterations have needed to be made to the hospital (yet). At its current size, it's seven floors high and seven floors deep, with the bottom-most floor given over to storage.   There area plans to change buildings in the vicinity. Talks have emerged about buying a apartment complex and converting it into cheap/free living for families of those in the hospital for long term stay, or for patients that need to be nearby for continuing treatments/physical therapy.

Architecture

Mercy's Healing is built in a V shape. This leaves an open area in the front for ambulances to deliver emergency patients, and the back has a car parking lot off to the backend of the left side of the V. The remainder of the back has been planted with trees and flowers, and a little bit beyond the greenery, there is a small lake as well.   At each end of the V are storage rooms (plus the entire bottom-most floor that is dedicated to storing items which are not used often, or are much too big to be allowed storage at the end of the V hallways).   The outside of the V shape also has some trees and flowers, but since this is where ambulances are told to come, it's not as much as the back view. (This means that when a patient is placed in a room, if it's already known that the person will be there for a long time, the priority is a window looking out to the back, for better mental and spiritual healing. If a person is only going to be there for a short time, then a window facing the road for ambulances is given).   Materials used are mostly a wooden frame with stone work around it. Colors are slightly different per the floor that a person is on (for example, pale sunshine yellow is the maternity floor) which helps the nurses/doctors remember what floor they're on if called in for consultation or help.   Most of the doors onto a floor are an "open" type, usually an archway so that beings who are bigger or who have wings/horns will be able to fit. There are doors to patient rooms though, for private consultations and privacy when it comes to medical issues.   Inside the hospital are cheerful colors (especially on the kids' floor), and there is a small lounge on most floors where the patients can hang out and pretend that they are not in the hospital (they can also be there with their families or support networks).   There is also one floor, right above storage, where the main purpose is research and uploading research to the interlinked hospital network.

History

The completion of the hospital took about three years to finish, and when it was completed there was a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating it's opening.   Behind the scenes, however, there were talks with ambulance crews and other hospitals during the final year of construction over which types of beings would be accepted at the "human-focused" hospitals and which ones would come to Mercy's Healing straight away. It was decided that beings with extra non-human appendages (wings, tails, etc.) would go to Mercy's, and beings with extra human appendages (extra eyes, arms, etc.) would be fine going to whichever hospital was closest to them.   There is one ambulance crew that is set to only receive calls that will have them transporting beings to Mercy's Healing.   Added note: The name was deliberately chosen to not to reference any type of religion (Lady of Mercy, for example), and emphasis given on "mercy" (compassion and forgiveness shown toward someone who has the power to punish or harm [medical professionals would harm someone if they refuse to treat a person]) and "healing" (to cause a wound, injury, or person to become sound or healthy again).

Tourism

There isn't really much tourism to the hospital, but word is reaching people beyond the city of Treford of a hospital that has been built to focus on beings, so there will possibly be a bit of medical tourism in the future.

Environmental Effects
There are a few rooms which are set in such a way that the temperature, humidity, pressure, etc. can be changed for the best health of the patient. However, for the most part, an aquatic being would have surgery outside of water and then be placed back in (most purely aquatic folk tend to have their own health professionals in the seas, lakes, and rivers they live in, and the beings that end up at this hospital are aquatic folk who live on land).
