Shivra

The Shivra are a group of Radashi that live in southern Ur'En. They are bound by a common culture that prizes heroism, individualism and democratic ideals. They speak a language is called Gritus and most worship the The Triumvirate. The Shivran people do not have a unified state, instead being organized into many smaller city-states. The largest of these are Ashur, Lagash and Mina. Most Shivran settlements are situated along the coast, and their people are reknown for their seamanship.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

The Shivra speak and read Gritus although many learn a second language like Al'Quami or Hoondi.

Culture and cultural heritage

Shivran culture is inseparable from two major institutions, The Triumvirate and the city-state. In both cases, Shivra see themselves tied less to a unifying group than to their personal patron city and god.The gods of the Triumvirate each oversee a particular city, seeing others as rivals. This means that even though they share a culture, different city-states have deep seated mistrust towards their neighbors. The cities will set aside their differences and unite should an outside threat emerge, as was the case during the War of Splintered Trees when hostilities erupted between the city-states and the Al'Badadi Empire. Once hostilities had ended however, tensions between the cities resumed almost immediately.

Shared customary codes and values

One of the most defining features of Shivran culture is their fascination with heroes and heroism. Many of their myths and legends tell not of distant gods but of mortals performing epic feats in the name of high minded ideals. In Shivran society, it is often considered the highest calling to die in the name of something greater than yourself. Tales of such individuals are passed down through the generations and many take great pride in the accomplishments of their ancestors.

One of the more distinguishing features of Shivran culture is an emphasis on democracy. There is something of a distrust of authority, especially mortal authority that runs through much of their society. Instead, power is given to the governed to decide on policies and leaders. The degree to which this applies and who deserves to vote varies from city to city but all pay at least lip-service to democracy.

Art & Architecture

Shivran society places a high value on beauty. Visual arts such as Painting, sculpture, and pottery are prized. One uniquely shivran artform is the stage-play, which are written and performed at all shivran settlements and holidays. Plays range from tragedies to comedies, each with a strong moral lesson embedded in the subtext.

Shivra culture also sees athleticism as an art-form. Sports and competition are common entertainment for both nobles and slaves. Races, wrestling, and javelin-toss are common events but the gladiatorial matches in Lagash have become incredibly popular in recent decades, bringing  tens of thousands to spectate every week.

Historical figures

One of the earliest major historical figures is Tobias The Explorer, who documented his travels around Ur'En. His writings are used even in present day across the world as a guide for the many strange and wonderful lands across the continent.
