Camp Dusk

Camp Dusk is a semi-permanent Kalari settlement on the far western end of the Redlands. It represents a place of respite before heading back out into the harsh desert, much like its sister settlement of Camp Dawn . Merchants from other lands travel leagues to trade with the Kalari. The Kalari exchange chitin, pelts, and textiles for exotic food, bronze tools, and other products the Kalari do not produce themselves.

Demographics

The vast majority of the population are Kalari who have stopped at the camp to resupply. The camp houses up to 30 lashes at peak capacity. These lashes will spend several weeks restocking supplies before heading back out. There are a number of Kalari that have taken up permanent residence at Camp Dusk, working as go-betweens for the lashes and foreign merchants. Traders from the outside represent a sizable minority of the population, and perhaps its most important denizens. They bring much-needed goods and services to the Kalari, who lack the tools and knowledge to produce many nessesieties themselves.

The population fluctuates regularly, depending on the number of lashes recuperating at a given time. It can grow from a bustling bazaar to nearly deserted, depending on the time of year.

Government

The camp is ruled by an informal council, made up of the Khans of each lash present. The foreign merchants also have representation on the council.

Defences

The camp has no structural defenses to speak of. The camp had historically never been attacked.

Industry & Trade

Camp Dusk sees the exchange of the products of Kalari craftsmanship for the bounties of the rest of Ur'En. Chitin, harvested from fearsome Redlands monsters is used as a tough but light alternative to leather. Kalari woven mats and fabrics line the manors of many a king and pauper alike. Kalari food, though certainly not appealing to everyone, can fetch a fair price from those with exotic tastes. Kalari trade these for things they cannot or do not make. This includes most metal tools and jewelry since Kalari's nomadic lifestyle is poorly suited to metalworking. Kalari also enjoy some of the cultural products of faraway lands, such as silk fabric, silver jewelry, and rare dyes. These are seen as status symbols among ambitious Kalar.

Infrastructure

Most of the camp's structures are large yurts and tents. Several wooden structures exist but occupants tend to cycle as residents come and go. There is a well at the center of the camp, which represents the only real permanent infrastructure.

History

Camp Dusk has traditionally been the easternmost point that the Kalari will migrate before turning back. Featuring clean water in the form of a natural well, it became commonplace to set camp for the night. Soon, multiple lashes would find themselves stationed here at the same time. Taking the opportunity to trade information and goods, the Kalari found their impromptu trading post growing. Soon, it attracted non-kalari traders, eager to sell Kalari made goods to the outside. The camp has continued to grow steadily since.
