Aetherscopic Engine

It's quite difficult to create something from nothing, and nowhere is that more evident than in the Aetherscopic Engine.   The Aetherscopic Engine is the technology that enables ships to fly from island to island uninterrupted. In effect, the engine pulls ambient magical power - commonly referred to as ambessense - from the emptiness of space, and transforms it into different energies that aid in powering the ship. The engine becomes less efficient the closer it gets to an island or star, as large masses interfere with the collection of ambessense.   The Aetherscope Engine is most commonly used in propelling the ship forward, by transforming the collected ambessense into kinetic energy and expelling it behind the ship. It's also capable of transforming the ambessense into other magical energies to power various functions of the ship, such as the armaments, lights, and amenities.
Inventor(s)
Cortun Disogeg, noted loxodon philosopher, was the first to theorize that energy (and thus propulsion) could be taken from the ambessense. However, it wasn't until 29 SE that the first functional prototype was made by elven inventor Leth Ragen, followed by her first successful Aethercospic Engine powered ship in 35 SE.
Access & Availability
The Aetherscopic Engine spread throughout the galaxy, and very quickly became the premier method of travel.   Its invention is credited with ending the Remnants Era, as interstellar travel suddenly became much more affordable and star systems had a harder time staying isolated.
