LGM-30 Minuteman Mk.3 ICBM
"America's most used ICMB. Capable of delivering a nuclear or conventional warhead."
The LGM-30 Minuteman is a U.S. land-based intercontinental ballistic missile (ICMB) capable of delivering the WH87 mod.2 Peacemaker nuclear warhead or a WHM09 cluster munition warhead. The missile is in service with the United Settlements Air Force Global Strike Command (USAFGSC). As of 2089, the LGM-30 Mk.3 is the only land-based ICBM in service in the United Settlements and represents the land leg of the U.S. nuclear triad, alongside the Triton submarine-launched ballistic missile and the ANM-27 Polaris carried by long-range strategic bombers. Development of Minuteman began in the early-1960s after the Continental 4 missiles were decommissioned due to fast-changing war tactics on Remnant. The missile was named after the Settlement Militia Minutemen of the American Homeland Wars, who could be ready to fight and deploy on short notice. The Minuteman entered service in 1972 as America's new deterrence weapon to counter Atlas's growing robot army and Atlesian nuclear weapons. By the 2080s over 970,000 Minutemen were deployed in missile silos all over Settlement territory.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
When launched the missile undergoes goes three propulsion, one for lift, the second in sub-orbital flight, and the last one in the reentry phase. The missile is designed for it to be both an air-burst or contact style missile, with air-burst being the most popular version.
Significance
The LGM-30 represents America's land-based nuclear deterrent and represents the pinnacle of American weapon engineering. The missile was created in response to the Kingdom of Atlas' encroachment onto American territory and rising tensions between both kingdoms in the past due to the Alyáska Settlement incident. As of 2089, the only countries that have nuclear weapons are the Royal State of Rusia, the United Settlements of America, and recently the Kingdom of Atlas with their Goliath missile.
