Well dedicated and honorable in peacetime but ruthless and aggressive in combat. He harbors a strong hatred towards groups who bring harm to other people and acts against them strongly using both words and lead as his weapons. He is very protective of his little sister and uses his free time to either practice his marksmanship or help his sister further reintegrate into society.

Special abilities

Semblance Death Stranded: Lazarus's unique Semblance allows him to summon skeletal glowing-eyed soldiers from any body of liquid or the shadows and can command them through black umbilical-like cords that come out from his spine. The soldiers summoned are from different eras in American military history and their weapons and gear vary. Additionally, he also has the ability to "resurrect" himself but at the cost of permanently damaging his Aura and overall health. It is unknown how this ability works but others speculate that it is a form of something called "Lazarus Syndrome"

Apparel & Accessories

(Before the Fall of Zodiac) He wears a digital desert camo OCP shirt and matching cargo pants. Over his shirt, he wears a Voodoo Tactical Vest that has a small compass embedded in the upper middle of his vest. He has an empty pistol holster strapped onto his right thigh. In addition, before the Fall, Lazarus wore the standard Zodiac Academy uniform.
(After the Fall of Zodiac) After the fall, he now wears a Mil-Tech digital woodland camo OCP shirt with matching pants with the right leg sleeve rolled up to accommodate his prosthetic leg. Over his shirt, he got rid of his Voodoo Tactical Vest and replaced it with an Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV) with a Helios MOLLE Recon chest rig. On his leg, he now wears an olive-colored 5.15 kneepad.
(Dress uniform) For his formal dress uniform, he wears the standard Army Green Service uniform that consists of an olive-colored "Eisenhowler Jacket" with golden buttons lining the front and front pockets to button up with, his rank and unit patch on the left shoulder, and his service ribbon rack pinned on to the left breast and centered 1/8 of an inch above and parallel to the left breast pocket. Underneath his Eisenhowler Jacket, he wears a tan dress shirt with a matching tie. On his bottom, he wears olive-colored pants with polished, brown dress shoes. On his head, he wears the Army standard cap with the seal of the American Eagle holding an olive branch in one claw and arrows in the other and also has laurel leaves sown onto the cap of the hat. He also has the Army Model 1902 saber clipped onto his left side and has the Model 1911 pistol holstered to his right side.
"Biohazard": Lazarus wears this unique outfit when in biological or chemical rich environments. He wears a long-sleeved shirt and 5.15 Apex pants with tactical boots all in the color tan. Over his shirt, he wears an Avalon Arms plate carrier, and over that wears a Disrupter D7CRX chest rig. Moving up to his head and face, Lazarus wears an FM10 CBRN Respirator with tinted eyes lens over his face and wears a FAST Core-Ops helmet.

Personal history

Early life, military service, and attendance at Zodiac Academy- Lazarus was born to Cyrus and Eucharis Chen in Long Sound Beach on the southwestern coast of the Settlement of Cali. Both his parents served as frontline troops during the 2065 Vacuoan Crisis. When he was a child Lazarus was trained by his parents in all things a soldier might need, his father taught him how to survive in the wild, how to track, and how to use firearms. His mother taught him both basic and advanced medical aid and taught him how to use wild plants to make medicine. At 9 years old Lazarus volunteered for the Leonidas program to further and better hone his techniques. Lazarus spent 6 years in that program and graduated in late July, he then was accepted into Advanced Ranger Training and spent the next 62 days in grueling and punishing training. After graduating from Ranger School he was first deployed to the eastern settlement border of Cali and that was where he found his adopted younger sister. Over his time in the Army, he has been deployed to many different nations, most notably the Royal State of Rusia where he gained the attention of Tsarina Anastasia and was made her Royal Advisor of American Affairs after impressing her with his knowledge of Rusian politics, history, and language. Another country he was deployed to often was the Islamic Republic of Asvakastan where he quickly built positive relations with the local tribes and due to his positive relations, they pledged their support to American forces. Throughout his time with the Army Lazarus rose quickly through the ranks due to his tactical and leadership prowess. A couple of years later he was asked to attend Zodiac Academy on the behalf of the United Settlements Army to learn and bring back new hunter tactics, techniques, and new knowledge about Grimm. He is also attending Zodiac Academy to obtain his Hunter's License.
Fall of Zodiac: As Insanus Hominum began to invade Zodiac and the surrounding area, Lazarus and his teammates engaged wave after wave of IH insurgents alongside Grimm that had breached the city perimeter. He and his teammates led an evacuation team and helped escort a large group of civilians to safety underneath heavy enemy attacks. After escorting the civilians to safety, Lazarus persuaded his teammates to extract with them and stayed behind to make a last stand and ensure the successful evacuation of the group. During his last stand, a large explosion erupted from his position, and as a result, Lazarus was classified as PKIA (Presumed Killed in Action) after initial searches for him failed. He was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor by the US Government and was promoted to Staff Sergeant for his actions. His family accepted the award on his behalf.
Recovering after the Fall of Beacon: A year after the Fall of Beacon, Lazarus was found amongst the ruins of Vale in a coma after his former teammates received cryptic audio messages that led them back to the city and to where Lazarus was lying dormant. He was repatriated back to the United Settlements and was hospitalized in a hospital in Las Stellas. He woke up from his coma 14 weeks after being found in the ruins. After he woke up from his coma he was reunited with his old teammates and his younger sister and was allowed to rejoin them after he completed his debrief of what happened during the invasion and completed a fitness test to prove he is physically fit enough to continue fighting. As a result of his last stand, he lost his right leg but had it replaced with a curved prosthetic leg. He is currently traveling around Remnant to find answers as to who orchestrated the attack on Zodiac.

During his academic life, Lazarus attended 3 schools: Pioneers Elementary School, Azure J. Middle school, and Patriot High School.

Lazarus is polite to friends and family and when meeting strangers he often tries to befriend them and sometimes asks them philosophical questions to gain a feeling of their personality. He is sometimes easy to anger especially if it involves his sister as he is very protective of her due to her past history. He is extremely studious in foreign languages and history and uses that to help build relations with the local people in the countries he deploys to.

Hobbies & Pets

In his hometown, he has a Rusian Husky as a pet and also has a Bonelli's Eagle. As for his hobbies, he can be frequently seen down at the shooting range or in any remote place practicing his marksmanship or practicing in close quarters combat, and he can also be found in the library or any quiet place reading about history or about warfare.

Character Prototype

Lazarus Chen and his powers are inspired by the character Clifford Unger from the game Death Stranding (2019). His attitude and personality are modeled after the "ideal American soldier" by showing his complete devotion and trust in his country as well as being very patriotic to his country. Lazarus and his powers are also inspired by his namesake Saint Lazarus who was risen from the dead by Jesus Christ. His namesake also invokes the colors of white or red reminiscent of the many paintings and depictions of him in white burial clothes or revived and in a red tunic.
