Humanity has spread throughout the sector since reaching the stars many thousands of years ago. Allying with other civilized races, they formed the Consortium, a force for order and good. The alliance is anchored by humanity and several other races. The saurians, are, unlike their name, not lizard-folk. They are humanoids that hail from a planet with slightly higher than earth-normal gravity, and therefore are stronger than un-augmented humans. When they were first encountered, they earned the moniker “saurian supermen” in honor of an ancient earth text. They call themselves the Orok, but humanity knows them as “saurians.” They have blue tinted skin and a crown of short stubby horns ringing their skulls.

Bathalians are also humanoid, and one of the founding members of the Consortium. However, unlike humans, they are hairless and are born without eyes or limbs, having evolved to not need them. Instead, they are augmented from birth cybernetically, with tech that grows with them. The last of the three member races are the doss, large fur-covered bear-like humanoids. Doss are incredibly tough physically, having redundant hearts and lungs, means they can take quite a lot of punishment before going down. This makes them tremendous warriors and many are found within the ranks of the Consortium military forces.

In opposition to the Consortium’s hold on civilized life in the sector, are the Crevak Tribe. Pirates across the sector banded together, forming a loose tribe lead by a Warmaster. Crevak philosophy is one of strength above all else, of taking what you want when and where you want it. The Crevak raid ships, capture people for slavery, and oppose the Consortium whenever encountered.

War, however, has raged for nearly a thousand years, on and off, between the Consortium and Crevak. Neither side won, but the hostilities ended after a major battle around the Consortium homeworld of Banuh. Since then, the Crevak have pulled back within their borders, venturing out for piracy and raids, but no full-scale invasion has been launched in almost a hundred years.

The war, though, has left both sides crippled. The Crevak fleet was decimated at Banuh, but the Consortium also lost much. Over the course of the war, much advanced technology was lost, and the remnants of Consortium facilities dot the sector. Relic Hunters, or more commonly known as Scavs, harvest abandoned tech from these facilities, for profit of course.

The Consortium holds a large portion of the sector, but the Crevak still hold nearly the same amount of worlds, many of them slave-worlds. The territory fought over, now referred to Free Space, is mostly a no-mans-land, but hosts many inhabited planets. Without the Consortium influence, Free Space locales are usually run by small-time warlords.
