Undearth Species

The inhabitants of Unearth are all human but not exactly as we know them. Having lived underground with little light for nearly 600 years they are much paler and weaker than they once were. There are still different races of human but all are paler and smaller than they naturally would be if they were exposed to more light.   These people have adapted to living in darkness. Their eyes are bigger, their pupils within their eyes are bigger as they try to take in as much light as they can. Most people have shaved heads as the hair that does grow is straggly and unhealthy. It looks terrible and ragged. A few people grow their hair a bit, just to feel different, to feel like they are special. Their veins also have risen to the surface of their skin over the centuries, desperate for more light.   The humans do not spend much time on their appearance. They wear old, dirty clothes made by the older people who can no longer mine. They sport hard metallic shoes and gloves to protect their precious hands and feet.   These people customise their own mining tools, They pick axes and harnesses are all carved out in cultural designs to help them stand out. Many have artistic "eye" designs as being able to see in pitch darkness is such an important skill. Others carve out names of loved ones or known ancestors to help motivate them to continue digging.   These people do not have a lot in terms of physical items. They have the very bare basics, metal bowls and plates, basic cooking utensils. Story-telling is of huge importance to these people. Stories of the surface above, why their ancestors began this quest downwards. What horrors lurk in the shadows below and above. Horror stories make for great entertainment for these people as there is always the possibility that they could be true.
