Training Rules

Basic Training

As characters purchase talents and skills with experience they have to spend time training to gain access to them. After purchasing a talent or skill rank a character must spend a number of days passively training equal to the tier of the purchase before gaining use of it. For example a tier 1 talent would take 1 day but a professional rank skill would take 3. This training may be increased by spending active downtime actions to increase the rate by 1.0x per action taken. So if a character spends both actions they count as having 3 days worth of passive training. The exception to this is any miscellaneous bonus such as cmd and saves, which are gained instantly on a long rest.

Downtime Training

Characters may spend their time actively training a skill or talent without spending experience. This training happens slowly and must be the main activity that character focuses on during the time spent training. The downtime training for skills and talents are calculated separately, but only one can be done at a time. Any cost reductions in experience cost do not count as spent experience.   Talents: Characters can use downtime training to train up to a number of Talents equal to half their highest mental modifier. Every day they spend training towards a Talent, they gain 1xp reduction towards the cost of the Talent. Once the the cost of the talent reaches 0xp, and the character has all prerequisites they have the talent. Every additional time that a character trains a Talent this way, they add one additional day of training to get 1xp.   Skills: Characters can use downtime training to train up to a number of Skills equal to their highest mental modifier. Every day they spend training towards a Skill, they gain 1xp reduction towards the cost of the Skill. Once the the cost of the skill reaches 0xp, and the character has all prerequisites they have the skill. Every additional time that a character trains a Skill this way, they add one additional day of training to get 1xp.

Special Downtime Training (Optional)

Depending on the Game Master, characters may be allowed to take part in special downtime training. This type of training is more focused on the flavor of and actions taken during the training. Characters typically should only have access to this type of training during long stretches of downtime or time skips, usually one month or longer. All characters should describe what they are doing doing during this time, and the GM should reward them based on those actions. Some examples of rewards a GM may give for special downtime training are flat amounts of experience that can only be spent on a specific category, percentage cost reduction on a category of talents when using downtime experience, unlocking special abilities created by the GM, uncovering information, or receiving some items related to the downtime taken. It is recommended that the GM averages the rewards up towards the character that received the most to keep things balanced. Just like with normal downtime any experience gained through this does not count as spent experience.   Example: Lillian Softpad spends a month in the city making contacts in the black market as well as the local gambling ring. She gains 15 experience to spend on skills or talents related to luck and gambling, these are also 50% cheaper when using this experience. In addition she now has access to items in the black market and made 50gp gambling.

NPC Downtime Training

Non player characters, such as cohorts or hirelings can gain experience like normal player characters, however it is more common for them to spend time learning new skills and talents. These NPC's train at a slower rate than compared to player or unique characters. In addition this training takes their full day and as such they are unable to do other things such as crafting.   Talents: NPC's can train a talent at 1 experience for every 1*talent tier days. So for example a tier 2 general talent would take 80 days of training.   Skills: NPC's can train a skill at 1 experience for every 1*skill rank days. So for example a Journeyman adventuring skill would take 40 days of training.
