For items of great power attunement is often required.

Atunemnet is a system that allows you to unlock the potential of powerful items slowly. In most cases, initial attunement only takes a few moments of concentration, but for a greater bond, more difficult steps are often required.
Attunement can also fall, this generally happens after a significant amount of time separated from the object. But in the case of some times, especially ones with some level of sentience. This can happen if you fall out of line with their values.
