Spires of Kadagast

Alpine Meadows; and Long Shadows

Commonly known as The Heaven Steppes, this ragged and crooked range pierces the skies - shaped almost like a massive throne. The land around the Spies is at best rugged, difficult terrain and at worst nearly impenetrable mountain slopes. Bitter winds sweep across the peaks during the winter. Although snow is relatively rare in the savannas below, it piles up among the peaks.

In contrast, the summer months are hot and dry. Wildfires are a risk on the mountain's wooded slopes, and travelers without knowledge of local springs and streams should carry plenty of water when they venture out into the highlands. Luckily, the heat keeps most dangerous creatures in their lairs during the day, but travel by night carries a significantly greater risk of encountering monsters or bandits.

The foothills to the east of the mountains are infested with dangerous entities, making travel of the Vale wilderness dangerous and difficult. The trolls and skinwolves of the Sea of Yaare are also known for terrorizing the mountains, venturing far and wide in search of fresh victims and treasures for some distant master.

A number of marauding gangs of humans, dwarves, half-giants and trolls scour the peaks as well, in search of folk to rob and terrorize. Several bands of goliaths also range throughout the mountains. Most of the time these goliaths wander above the tree line to keep clear of monsters and travelers. Once a year, though, they engage in a great race across the mountains. A non-goliath that completes the race becomes an honorary member of one of the clans.

Geography

The Red Crater

Just south of Mount Starris is a this large volcanic crater was said to be cursed eons ago and even its nature appears strange and warped. Shadow Spirits live inside and are said to attack any person who gets too close. In some Cycles these spirits have mysteriously decided to bring the reign of terror beyond their lands.

Sea of Yaare

The mountains house the treacherous paths to the Sea of Yaare - secret lands that cuts a scarlike line through the Spires of Kadagast. A lush oases that only the truly courageous or truly desperate attempt to reach. Travelers smell the Sea of Yaare long before they see it, as the blooming flowers cast a perfume on the wind. Despite its appearance, the valley is a place of grave danger.

Heaven's Mount

The highest peak of the Spires, said to be visible from all points of the Dragondown Coast. It has never been scaled, even by the most tenacious Goliath or talented Goat Knight - seemingly suspended in the clouds due to the area being subject by large roots. However, the land is unstable, and large chunks of the mountain can be seen falling all around during the peak of summer.

Khazat ald Hraungmarnat; Hammerfast

Nestled in the nook of the Kadagast Throne sits is a rare haven for Mountain Dwarves - marked perimeter fence and a dozen or so stone towers. Once a necropolis, designed to host the venerated dead of the Mountain Dwarves as before the descrution of Odranam Ath, centuries ago. Now the Half-Dead City is a bustling dwarven metropolis - carved entirely out of Carbalite Ore.

Fauna & Flora

Kongomatos, Perytons, Citrusscent Owl, Soarwings, Deadleaf Slater, Deathspine Nighthawk, Arachas, Bulgus, Dire Wildebeest, and Shepherd Drakes are common enough among the fallen crags of the Spires. However there have been sights of worse things - Trolls, Skinwolves, and strigois.
Common flora includes Everwort Root, Healer's Boon Herbs, Fiend’s Chili, and Ironlead thickets. The Sea of Yaare is filled with even more exotic and beautiful flora - though the corpse flowers, carnivorous plants, and deadly toxins in the air make it difficult to harvest.
