Qarinah - The Omen People

The legacy of Bael Turath runs deep, even after the Godswar. At the height of the empire, Bael Turath was closest to its fall. It strained under the pressures of ruling defeated peoples. Noble houses schemed to carve out their own kingdoms or to replace their betters in the halls of power. Civil wars, seceding territories, assassination plots, famine, plague - Bael Turath, and by extension Humanity, endured all these threats to its existence and survived by only the barest of margins.

The most avaricious, the most domineering, and the most paranoid - including the Turathi Emperor himself - began to dream of a new age. They awoke from fevered sleep with visions of the future still floating before their bloodshot eyes. With the full force of the Emperor’s will behind them, chosen nobles were permitted to perform dark rituals that would put them in contact with the powers that would help them maintain their rule: fiendish spirits that allowed them to cross the Starfall Sea.

Since, anyone who touched the influence of the Wraith World has a chance to give birth to one of these beings: Infernalings, Banelings, Omens. They had many names over the years, and even in the Nerathi Imperium Omen children born of royalty are allowed to keep their horns, but were imprisoned deep underground for all eternity - studying, or plotting, or experimenting in forgotten gaols. Those of the commoners typically have their horns cut off at birth, a procedure that tends to kill them. Those that survive may find employ as soldiers in the various armies of the Nerathilords.

Even after the Godswar, Qarinah are treaded with care. Most never know of their fiendish heritage - as they wear long patterned clocks, bodies bedeck in jewellery, shared motifs of triangles across both cloths and face paint. Their horns, covered in ornamentation and hidden beneath long cloaks or turbans - a shared culture slowly spreading among other Tiefling tribes. Many of whom are nomadic in nature, seeking to find a land where they can settle.

Qarinah who prefer to go uncovered are brazen and can be inspiring for others of their lineage. However this can cause quite the stir, as other species may not fully understand the Qarinah before them is not a Demon! And while they may be a Sub-Species of others, They are a true people. Not just that one family in a village touched by the demonic, but their own civilisation with a rich culture and history.
